“Q & A with KiRa”

I went to a high school with a student population of over 3,000. A student body made up of all races, ethnicities and cultures. My senior class had over 900 graduates ( would have been about a 100 more, but not everyone makes it across the stage ). One of the quotes I can recall the most from my teachers was “Once you all graduate, you will encounter less than 7% of your surrounding peers in ‘The Real World’. My social circle at that time was heavily populated so I couldn’t for a second think that what many of my teachers were saying would hold true.

How wrong I was.

Life moves on…..with or without you.

And it doesn’t wait for the reunion.

Since the end of high school, I’ve had friends of course go on with their:

• academic careers, • travel the world, • some ventured directly into entertainment careers, • parenthood • self-made moguls & • those that stayed local and gained independence and • those that just stayed at home.

I was a combination of a few of the above listed transitional states post high school. A stay-at-home, junior college, multiple job working hybrid.

Others like my friend pictured above KiRa Henderson, left the area and went to school and pursued passions that she kept hidden for most of high school. I have not seen KiRa since we walked across the stage in 2004 but we reconnected via social media ( of course ).

When I 'caught up’ with her I noticed she was deeply immersed in variations of the fashion world. Mainly as a stylist and a blogger. I started following her more vigorously and became more and more intrigued with her stylish eye. I’m always find it compelling when individuals I grew up with are out in the world building their own identity, their own brand. I see talented, beautiful people everyday in LA and in most cases I see certain friends I grew up with in these creative independent people…..

But not everyone leaves the nest. Everyone isn’t as inclined to break away. Shiiiiiet, I wasn’t for awhile, but I’m glad I made the change. Had the courage to change.

I’ve been wanting to do a Q & A for awhile now and KiRa obliged my request to be interviewed. So please, read and enjoy!

THE INTERVIEW

CM. Where are you from?

KH. I am from Takoma Park,Maryland

CM. When did you first notice you were intrigued by fashion ?

KH. I was always intrigued by fashion in high school I just never expressed it and I always read Seventeen magazine and loved the editorials.

CM. Where do you live currently?

KH. I currently live in Maryland

CM. What is your next desired destination for travel?

KH. Paris or Japan

CM. Why these two places ?

KH. Paris because I traveled there as a child and I would to experience it as a adult I think I would appreciate the culture more. Japan because the fashion there is so unique and fun and I think it would inspire me in so many ways.

CM. What is your favorite article of clothing and why?

KH. Currently a bomber jacket because it is versatile and it comes in many different colors and prints.

CM. Can you recall one of the first people you ever styled?

KH. Yes it was during a photoshoot for a designer, those were the first pictures in my portfolio.

CM. What was the shooting for? and how did the request for you to style transpire?

KH. The shoot was for the designers look book for the upcoming collection. And the request transpired because I emailed numerous designers in the area offering my styling services and she replied and we went from there.

CM. At what moment did you know you wanted to be a stylist?

KH. When I was enrolled at the University of the District of Columbia studying fashion merchandising and I was learning about all the different aspects of fashion and one day it just hit me while reading a magazine and looking at the editorials.

CM. Where do you typically find your inspiration to put certain looks together?

KH. Outdoors, different colors , architecture and different trends.

CM. Does the race of a model create any challenges/limitations for you as a stylist?

KH. No I think all races look great in a variety of things especially color

CM. What is your favorite color? [ Does that favorite change with the season ? ]

KH. School bus yellow is my favorite color and no it doesn’t change, some seasons I may be drawn to a certain color for example I have been drawn to the color pink lately.

CM. What has been your biggest challenge so far as a stylist?

KH. Finding styling jobs and figuring out my next step and getting myself out there more as a blogger.

CM. What are your current (3) favorite songs? [ Songs that are being played on your iPod/mobile device ]

KH. Anything Bryson Tiller Beyonce Formation and Kanye West Father Stretch my My Hands 1&2

CM. Are you a believer in the theory that music and fashion work hand-in-hand?

KH. Yes I am definitely a believer in that theory, the music played on the runways during fashion week is a perfect example of how one inspires the other

CM. Do you design any of your own clothes/accessories?

KH. I have in the past, sometimes I will do a quick DIY project to make something that I want.

CM. What is your favorite brand/style from the 90’s?

KH. I have a few lol choker necklaces, overalls, jelly shoes, bandanas, mom jeans and all of these are still current today!

CM. I noticed that you spell your first name a particular way. Why is that? What is the purpose?

KH. Ra is the sun god in Egyptian so it means the sun or light
