My submission for the 2025 d.gray-man iconic moments zine! So glad to be part of another project. Happy 21st birthday Dgm!

These characters don't get much love in the series. They've only appeared in a few chapters, and even then, those chapters weren't nice to them. But here we are today, giving them some much needed attention anyway!

Done with Rebelle 7, the most satisfying digital art program I've ever used.

[tanuki-kimono]

Rainbow galore for this pastel outfit, featuring a seigaiha (stylised waves) kimono, paired with a tate nishiki (brocade with warp made from different colored threads) obi depicting meibutsugire (old patterns) in kiredori (style mimicing torn and patched paper/fabric pieces).

Meibutsugire or jidaigire are auspicious patterns (originally from China) which were popular during Muromachi period and mostly used for ceremonial items (for ex. to wrap tea ustentils). Those motifs included:

arisugawa (geometrical pattern with stylized deers/animals)

shokkō (cloisonné pattern)

sasazurumon (blooming bamboo, often in arabesque)

araiso (wave-beaten shore​ with jumping carps)

hana usagi (rabbit among flowers pattern)

taishi kantō (ikat pattern representing sitting Buddha figures)

as well as several stripe and plaid, like tsurugaoka kantō, hino kantō, funakoshi kantō, or yoshino kantō + other fabrics like toraigire

Yay, your ask box is open <3<3<3 omg, i love your posts TwT could i ask about the S/O of the crows (including link) asking them to teach them how to fight? not exorcists but they don't wanna be protected all the time~

Link is a little hesitant at first. The thought of teaching you to fight only put you in more danger, as you would no longer be seen as just a helpless civilian.

However, you can convince him. He sighs and agrees, anything for you.

He’s a really good teacher, actually. Patient, but doesn’t coddle too much–unless you get hit like in the face, then he’s freaking out.

The one who definitely gets the best results in the end, that’s for sure.

Madarao says no at first. He doesn’t have the time to teach you, he’s very busy. 

If you persist enough, he’ll teach you a couple things, but it’s not in depth or anything. Just a few pointers, should you ever get in a fight.

He’s an okay teacher, nothing to write home about, though. You learn but he’s very stoic about it.

All in all, don’t go looking for fights. He didn’t teach you enough for that.

Tokusa is very enthusiastic about it, agreeing instantly. 

He always worries about you, so this will ease some of the weight on his shoulders.

He’s not that good of a teacher, but at least he’s enthusiastic. 

He’s the type to say “do this”, completely expecting you to already know what “this” is.

Tewaku, like Link, is a little hesitant at first. She’s not confident in her teaching abilities.

Assure her that she’ll do great, and she’ll cave. 

She doesn’t teach you a lot, just basic self defense, and she’s a little awkward at teaching it, but you guys find your flow.

You are at least competent by the end of it.

Goushi plays twenty questions with you before giving you an answer. “Why do you want to fight?” “Why should I teach you?”, etc.

He eventually agrees but he doesn’t seem too happy about it. He thinks it’s a waste of time.

He’s not a good teacher. However, he makes a good punching bag. He absorbs punches like their nothing–or maybe you’re too weak to really affect him. 

You leave those lessons with nothing more than sore knuckles.

Kiredoi agrees but is not physically unhappy nor enthusiastic about it. 

She is a very…quiet teacher. You get a little worried you are getting something really wrong before she quietly nods in approval.

She leaves a lot of guess work. Again, she’s quiet, so you’re not actually sure what she expects you to do.

You walk away wondering why it was you wanted to do this again, but somehow you retain everything she “taught” you.

* ALMOST ALWAYS IN THE KITCHEN HE LOVES IT IN THE KITCHEN OKAY HUSH

* He’s almost like Marie but quieter and would only reply with hums and grunts sometimes

* it’s been one month since anyone in the Order has heard him talk they’re now wondering if they hallucinated it or if it was real someonekickthem

* is someone that makes you go “must protect” even tho he’s stronger and bigger than you a.k.a. min- send help-

Kiredori

* Saves Tokusa from cockroaches without so much as a blink of an eye

* Is actually pretty cheeky once you get close to them

* No one suspects them of pulling pranks and Tokusa, Allen or Lavi always gets blamed

* Always hanging around the practice room or the science division

* V interested in science division shenanigans

Madarao

* Kanda’s sparring partner tbh

* He’s always either training or scolding his siblings there is no saving anyone

* Sees Miranda as a sister figure and has taken Timothy under his wings when he’s not under the general’s or Emilia’s care

* GOOD COACH V SUPPORTIVE COACH

Tokusa

* iS DEATHLY AFRAID OF COCKROACHES SAVE HIM

* Gets into fights like a heck of a lot

* He has -99.99% idea on how to handle/talk to girls save him

* Acts as the teasing elder brother to the Thirds and also Timothy

Tewaku

* Little sister to everyone in the Order tbh-

* Closer to Lenalee and Emilia then anyone else

* If she’s disappeared from your side, you can probably find her in the history section with Lavi, marvelling at all the lost worlds of the past

* Is a relentless coach but a teacher that gives all her knowledge in a stoic yet caring manner

* Teaches Miranda sparring in their free time
