Kismeisies on Troll Tumblr totally start discourse with each other as flirting.
blackrom? no, vantablackrom
Trying to explain kismesis to a non-homestuck is really, really hard.
Drop them into TV tropes right here: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/FrenemyTropes
If they know the following pairs, just explain it as them but with sexual tension based on how much they are envious of the other one’s traits:
Naruto and Sasuke: this is everyone’s favorite go-to. I don’t quite like it as an example because I don’t feel like Naruto ever hated Sasuke, but they definitely have a rivalry, which is more what they mean by “hate” in this context rather than “despise”
Goku and Vegeta: literally my favorite example. Both of them are constantly driven to increase their power levels - Goku to stay ahead of Vegeta, Vegeta with the hopes of beating him someday. They outright have a conversation about this in one of the more recent movies.
Explain it also as tsundere with more tsun than dere.
The other quintessential one is Zim an Dib. It is often referenced in homestuck fandom as a “blackromcom”.
basically anything where of them are constantly trying to best each other, to the point of obsession, but if anything were to happen to the other and THEY aren’t the one to defeat them (think Zuko springing Aang out of jail) then they’ve lost meaning to their life - that’s THEIR rival, how dare someone else challenge/defeat them! ditto if they were to ever actually defeat them; the rivalry gives their life purpose, gives them something to strive for. Often the things they hate about the other are weaknesses they dislike in themselves or traits they’re envious of.
hope that helps!
