Whisks make all manner of dishes possible from whipped cream to pan sauces. Thank you to Turner Williams who patented this miracle of culinary genius in 1870. Since then, wire whisks have become nylon whisks, flat whisks and even attachments on mixers, but we bet every kitchen has one. The Potato Peeler Before Alfred Neweczeral invented the handheld potato peeler in 1947, countless amounts of product was wasted while trimming potato skins with knives. This competes only with the apple parer patented by Moses Coates in 1803. Not only a time saver, the peeler can be used for any number of vegetable products saving money and increasing the aesthetics and flavors of more dishes than you can shake a paring knife at. The Waffle Iron When one needs a waffle, there is no alternative but to make it with a waffle iron. Without your 1869 patent, ice cream cones would never have been invented, or maybe we'd be eating ice cream with pan cakes. The Two-Wheel Can Opener Star Can Opener Company solved a 100 year dilemma by pressing two rotating wheels together in order to remove the lid from cans of food. This was a tremendous improvement over hand held cans that required punching open with a lever or sickle, even with guards. This also meant significantly fewer fingers sliced on jagged edges and a reduction in tetanus shots. The Toaster and Sliced Bread This tie exists because they go so happily hand-in-hand. The toaster and its partner, sliced bread, are a match made in heaven. We are certain Escoffier must have been amazed. Otto Frederick Rohwedder, who worked on the sliced bread dilemma for years, perfected a method in 1928. Not only did his machine slice, it wrapped! Combine that with Charles Strite's pop-up toaster of 1919 and voila, the perfect BLT could begin.
