A little snippet of my favorite scene from my book!
“Hey.”
Serrena looked to her left, a scuffed boot dangled near her face. Close enough to kick her square in the jaw if the owner so wished.
She followed the boot further.
There, sat atop a wooden platform was a woman. She had been watching her for who knows how long.
Serrena had to use her hand to shade her eyes from the sun that was shining brightly behind the woman, obscuring her view of her face with a halo of light.
“What were you looking at?” She leaned forward trying to follow Serrena’s previous line of sight.
With the shift in angle, Serrena could make out the threadbare tunic that barely fit her body. Her hair, somewhere between blond and white, was chopped short and uneven as if cut in a hurry.
Her legs were mostly covered by tall boots, but Serrena noticed they were riddled with scars, some were fresh.
“I just wanted to say that I think you’re gorgeous and was wondering if I could take you out some time?” The girl smirked with more confidence than was necessary.
Serrena rolled her eyes, turning away, tugging her hood into place as she stepped forward, eager to get away from this girl. She wasn’t in the habit of making friends from the capitol.
“Wait!” She called, and reached out with both her hands.
The sharp clatter of chains caused Serrena to pause.
She turned, eyes locking onto the iron shackles digging into the girl’s wrist.
Only then did Serrena truly register her surroundings. The crowd of people surrounding her were all facing the same direction, waiting. Slowly, she followed their gaze.
A stage.
And the girl she was trying to avoid was seated atop of it. “You’re in shackles.” Serrena stated the obvious.
“Oh these?” She held up her wrists, making the iron jingle. “A minor set-back.”
