alright hi i started to finish my rewatch of the umbrella academy, got 25 minutes into episode eight when i had a thought

people spend a lot of time shitting on luther for his actions, and yknow i get it, what he does at the end of the season is super shitty and i won’t deny that, but at the same time i refuse to trivialise him and his pain because i think he’s one of the more fascinating characters of the show. so i’m gonna take a page out of klaus’ book and empathise with the guy while acknowledging he needs to be better. here goes:

luther was just as brainwashed to believe vanya didn’t matter as much as the rest of them almost as much as vanya was

i just know that people are gonna look at that and get mad at me, so let me explain (also note that this is just an opinion, if you disagree then fair enough!! it’s all love here, my dears)

luther is number one. it’s a huge part of his personality, his upbringing - it’s his name. reginald put him in charge of his siblings, kept him at his side as his most trusted child. he made him loyal, brought him up to believe his first job was to put everyone else first. luther was not a boy, he always was a superhero. of course, though, reginald is a shit and doesn’t actually understand the qualities he was trying to instill into luther. it’s like he was trying to raise captain america but he fucked it. he never let luther think for himself; instead of raising a man to be kind and selfless, a hero in every classic meaning of the word, he raised him to be his version of a hero, the one that does everything his (reginald’s) way. by doing this, reginald basically made luther a sponge for all his awful and toxic behaviours and opinions. luther is by far the most susceptible to their father’s vitriol, so lemme ask you this:

how many times throughout their childhood do you think reginald said to luther, “forget about vanya; she’s not important”?

luther’s been shown to have a protective, caring, big brother side to him, but his first reactions to situations have always been overridden by the other voice in his head: his father’s. the only time luther lets his emotions through first is when he’s thinking about allison (i know, i know, the luther/allison debate is a hot button issue, but for the sake of this post im just talking about how he sees things, alright?). luther loves allison; it overrides every instinct their father taught him. and it blinds him, because that boy doesn’t know how to process anything through a nuanced or objective lens. everything is a mission, it’s either good or bad. there’s no room for taking the time to understand a motivation.

so, to my point: luther spent his whole life deferring to dad’s judgement first. it’s only in those last few days that he even begins to question that judgement. vanya was never on missions with them, she was never a part of the academy. reggie spent their whole upbringing telling them, telling HIM that vanya was ordinary and kept her separate. combine that with learning that with the love luther has for allison - the love he never learnt to understand properly, which blinds him and rules him - and him learning from pogo, reginald’s other go-to apologist, that vanya had potentially world ending powers, he’s not gonna ask questions. those seeds of separation are already fully grown in luther’s mind: vanya is other, except now she’s other in different terms.

this is what i REALLY hope for for luther in season two. it’s the only place his character can grow to: learning to see the rest of his family, PARTICULARLY VANYA, like people, with complex thoughts and feelings, and learning to see himself that same way too. learning to see himself as his own man, with the ability to make his own decisions.
