do you think there's any truth to the idea that ppl with klinefelter syndrome are more quiet, sensitive, shy, bookish etc and less sporty/assertive than endosex cismale peers? or do you think that's stereotyping from ppl who see them as not "fully" male? i've even read an article promoting testosterone therapy specifically to make xxy kids more "assertive" which seems questionable to me cuz what's wrong with being shy and sensitive? also if u have any personal and less clinical resources on klinefelter i would appreciate it! like good memoirs or documentaries or blogs. thank u!
Hi anon!
I have not looked super in-depth into that research, but to me, that feels like probably some bullshit stereotyping and weird biological essentialism on the part of researchers. I don't think testosterone has the connection to assertiveness that people seem to think it has. Honestly, I always feel really skeptical when people doing intersex research start to assign personality traits to different conditions--I just don't think we have the research to prove that hormones actually affect people in that way, and I just feel like there is not any evidence besides anecdotal evidence that shows that those personality traits are linked.
One Klinefelters resource a friend with Klinefelters has reccomended to me is this youtube channel, Living with XXY. (warning, they do use a lot of cissexist language and mostly refer to it as a "male" variation.)
The XXY project also has a lot of personal stories shared from people with all sorts of experiences and is a more trans inclusive website.
This memoir isn't specifically about Klinefelters (The author has AIS), but has still gotten a ton of good reviews and might be worth checking out.
I know quite a few tumblr mutuals with Klinefelters but I don't want to link them without permission, if anyone is comfortable please feel free to reply with your url!
If anyone else has good nonclinical resources about Klinefelters, please let me know!
