KLPA2016 Stillness&Distance 2nd Prize / MICHELLE SANK, UK Olly - Transgender Female to Male. 3 months into hormone transition therapy I am photographing Olly every 3 months over the next 2 years till he completes his transition. I was born in South Africa and have been living in the UK since 1987. My practice is concerned with the notion of encountering, collecting, and re-telling. I am interested in creating sociological landscapes, interplays of human form and location that are significant in their visual, sociological and psychological nuances. My photographs have been exhibited and published in England, Europe, Australia and Mexico, South Africa and the U.S.A and are held in collections in the UK and the USA. www.michellesank.com Exhibition of Finalists 6 - 17 August at Whitebox Gallery, MAP, PUBLIKA, Kuala Lumpur #klpa16 #klpa #portrait #photography @mapkl_publika @timeoutkl
KATHRIN TSCHIRNER, Germany / KLPA Stillness&Distance Winner 2016 “#14-09-03 - Frau VII,” from the series “Kurfürstenstraße” A sex worker for more than 30 years, Sabine (not her real name) stands in a quite backyard, 300 meters from Kurfürstenstraße. The photo series and accompanying book “Kurfürstenstraße” is a portrait of the area in and around Kurfürstenstraße (Kurfürsten Street) in Berlin. The area has been a known haunt of prostitution for the past 130 years. The German capital is one of only two cities in the country which does not have a restricted area for sex work; contact between sex workers and customers and the sex work itself often take place within residential areas. Due to the rapidly changing demographics of the area, streetwalking is becoming more marginalized and tensions are rising as secluded places to do sex work are fast disappearing. I met Sabine when she was sitting on the stairs next to my house. It demanded all my courage to ask her if I could take a picture. Before this evening I’d never thought to take pictures of prostitution. Living around the Kurfürstenstraße it's really rare that you’re able to look into the eyes of one of the sex workers when you’re a woman, there’s always this barrier. But my encounter with Sabine blew open the boundaries between this profession and myself. I wasn’t interested in making portraits of sex workers; it was more about showing the character of the district. Through my persistence to learn more I ended up stepping into OLGA, a counseling center. Together with them we attained a grant to implement a initiative with PhotoVoice and the women of the street. I was allowed to get a deeper insight into the day-to-day struggles that these women have to handle. I wanted to create a feeling, which lingers with the viewer without being explicit. The photograph should work like a piece of a puzzle; portraying only a fragmented idea of the reality. www.kathrin-tschirner.com Exhibition of Finalists 6 -17 August Whitebox Gallery, MAP Publika, Kuala Lumpur #klpa16 #portrait #photography @mapkl_publika @timeoutkl

FEATURED FINALIST 2016 HEIKO TIEMANN, Germany Boy with drape, from the series "Infliction", 2014 This image is part of my long ongoing series ""Infliction"" which started in 2013 a school for children. It is within an area with a lot of social problems and it is a place where such problems resurface quite significantly. There are 'overlooked' individuals within our society and who have become more and more neglected by the mechanisms and dynamics of our system. There is a sense of deep respect and humbleness which I feel. I don‘t want to exploit the children, but to give them a visual voice which will have strong echoes of importance in a manner which is solely grounded within their own history, appearance and inner circumstances. They are individuals with a strong personality and deserve all the respect. First there is the process of involvement. I did have to integrate myself with empathy and curiosity. At the same time I have to keep my focus on my visual sensitivity. Who gives them a position of expressing or even the possibility of just being for the purpose of being? There is a sense of deep respect and humbleness which I feel. They are from difficult backgrounds like immigrant families, refugees, orphanages and dysfunctional families.
