Does a Base Tan Protect Skin? Patients have good intentions to help prevent burning when they want to achieve a "base tan" before summer, but there is no such thing as a safe tan - base tan included. Given that most people leave out sunscreen to achieve a base tan, they are more susceptible to skin damage caused by UV exposure. The best way to prevent sunburn is by applying one or two layers of broad-spectrum SPF 50 sun- screen at least 30 minutes before sun exposure - and reapply every 2 hours.
