Album Review: Huffamoose - Kneeslappers (newly not remastered)
Although its not-quite-ready-for-prime-time nature is evident in the creaks and cracks in Craig Elkins’ voice and in the skeletal arrangements, Kneeslappers is essential Huffamoose.
Consisting of demos and B-sides and released digitally in 2004, it’s been reissued to streaming platforms and (newly not remastered) for the masses.
This is the Huffamoose of the band’s 1993 self-titled debut. Jazzy, sardonic, with Kevin Hanson’s guitar and Erik Johnson’s drums creating the aura of a smoky club full of berets and cigarette holders rather than the more straight-rock approach the band embraced on the major-label We’ve Been Had Again and I Wanna be Your Pants LPs.
You have to suffer through my life, Elkins sings on the opening cut, “I Can’t Tell You,” which sets the tone, musically and lyrically.
Elkins is typically contemplative and existential on “Stars are Not” and “Dying is a Foggy Dance.” He's more down-to-Earth and sarcastic on “Yes Man” as he wonders:
Am I going to get shot down on the street/am I going to get terminated from my piece-of-crap job?
There are elements of Huffamoose scattered throughout Kneeslappers, such as on “Fear of Change,” which is like a hybrid of “James” and “Sacred Ground.” “Sweet Thing,” which appears in vocal and instrumental versions, adds clarinet to the mix, taking the basement-club mentality a bit further.
A joy as-is, Kneeslappers would’ve been near perfect if the songs were fully fleshed and mixed to bring out more of Jim Stager’s bass. But for those who’ve always craved more of what Huffamoose offered, here it is (newly not remastered) and all.
Grade card: Huffamoose - Kneeslappers (newly not remastered) - B+
