一九三〇年代，美國經濟大蕭條時期，中西部有一戶人家原本張羅三餐就不容易，根本沒有閒錢奢侈。

有一天，鎭上貼滿了海報，說有馬戲團要來表演，入場券每張一美元。這家庭中一位小男孩渴望能看到馬戲團表演，但是父親告訴他，必須自己打工存錢。這個小男孩從未看過馬戲，所以他拼命打工賺錢，終於能購買一張入場券。

馬戲團抵達那天，他上街看團員以及動物進城的遊行。就在他佇足觀看一個小丑跳著舞向他走來，這男孩王小丑的手中，然後就站在街道旁鼓掌叫好，這男孩就將他的入場券放在小丑的手中，然後就站在街道旁鼓掌叫好地看完整個遊行。

這男孩跑回家裏，將所看到的告訴父親，並敘述馬戲團多麼有趣。他的父親聽完之後，就擁著他說：「孩子，其實你並沒有看到馬戲團的表演，你所看到的只是遊行而已。」

這是聖誕節的喻道故事。許多人對節日慶典活動興奮不已，卻錯過主戲。

在此聖誕的季節裏，讓我們記住在卑微馬槽裏所發生的事情，以及耶穌誕生對我們的意義。
