Inspiration
Sometimes you just need to open your eyes.
I had been throwing around the idea of creating some type of blog or brand.
Hold on, let me backtrack for a second. These days, I work in finance and essentially play in Excel all day. The joke in the office is that it's my sandbox. "Just let Alex go play in his sandbox," they say. And, I love it. To many of you, that may sound incredibly boring. But, it's really not all that different from what I'll be doing with this blog. When I build a model in Excel, I start with a blank sheet, a blank canvas of sorts. Then I spend countless hours "painting" through trial and error until it's ready to be displayed and it can solve a problem. With Know Detroit, I will spend countless hours exploring the city and going to different places until I can provide, you, the people taking a chance to read my posts, with quality insight into where to go and what to see and do in Detroit.
So, the inspiration was a long time coming. I wanted to create something, anything, but didn't know topic I would post about.
I listened to a great book (it's nice to during the commutes from my condo in Detroit to my office in Auburn Hills) called Crush It! by Gary Vaynerchuk. The book talks about finding something you're passionate about, becoming an expert in the topic, and Crushing It with the insights you can provide your audience. The question became, what was I passionate about? I’m a big sports guy; I love the outdoors; I’ve got a dog; I like music. No. No. No. No. These would turn into work if I had to create content for them all the time. I’ve heard that as soon as blogging becomes a chore, you shouldn’t be doing it.
About a year ago now, my cousin, who was living on my couch at the time, brought home a sheet of paper with all the bars and restaurants in Downtown, Midtown, Corktown, New Center, Eastern Market, and Rivertown. I casually checked off 57 places while only having lived in the city for 3 months.
Recently, I thought about all the people that regularly ask me for recommendations and reviews on places. If a place is great, I'll tell 'em. If there's a place they might like, I'll tell 'em. And, if a place flat out sucks, I'll tell 'em. I've been asked to help plan tours for out-of-towners, bachelor parties, pub crawls, brewery/ distillery tours, events, etc etc etc. I was Crushing It without even realizing it.
The other day I looked at this list of places now hanging on my fridge, and the number of checkmarks had grown to over a hundred. All this time I wanted to blog and post, and I was already doing it.
I'm still trying to figure out how to make Squarespace, Instagram, Tumblr, Facebook, and Twitter all talk to one another, so please excuse me during the trial and error period. Like our fine city, Know Detroit is a work in progress. Besides, it wouldn't be very Detroit without a little dust.
Cheers!
Alex
