Trips to the apothecary
Knowledge (arcana) or (religion) DC17, or Mystic Theurge Level Check DC11:
Mystic theurges study the true nature of magic, blending their study of arcane and divine sources to access a broader range of magical power than any mage who seeks only of those paths. Clergy of gods of magic, such as Wee Jas and Boccob, are particularly suited for this rare mastery.
The Death card from the high arcana of a tarot deck.
Knowledge (arcana) DC15 or Diviner Level Check DC10: Upright, the Death card signals that one major phase in your life is ending, and a new one is going to start. You just need to close one door, so the new one will open. The past needs to be placed behind you, so you can focus your energy on what is ahead of you.
Reversed, Death is still about change, but it means that you have been resisting it. You could be worried about letting go of the past, or you could not be sure of the changes that you need to make to go forward. Resisting the change and holding onto the past can limit your future, which can cause you to feel like you are in limbo. You should take some time to assess the ways that you have been approaching changes in your life. Depending on its position in the reading pattern, the new phase signalled by Death may be positive or negative, and vary in importance. In certain positions, it is the card most likely to warn of mortal danger, as the new phase may be a transition to the afterlife.
Knowledge (arcana) DC18 or Disciple of the Eye Class Check DC13:
Disciples of the Eye train through intense meditation and physical combat to open and enhance their senses in ways that mimic the natural gifts of dragonkind.
Knowledge (arcana), (nobility & royalty), or (religion), or Profession (soldier) DC15:
The motto of MARSUB, the Terolus Human Military's Magical and ARcane SUpport Branch, is "by spell and steel". This is meant to reinforce their identity as not only mages, but soldiers. Every member of MARSUB is given at least basic weapons training, no matter their specialization.
Knowledge (arcana) or (religion), or Bardic Knowledge DC30:
The Hourglass of Chronepsis is a lost artifact made during the Dawn Age by the dragon god of time and death. It is said to be capable of changing the fate of the holder to transform them into anyone in existence, or to control their personal time to restore them to perfect health. However, only the strongest and wisest holder could use it without the permission of Chronepsis; any mere mortal would die instantly as the sand drained away.
Knowledge (arcana), (nature), or (the planes) DC15:
Negative and positive energy can be found mingled throughout the Material plane in roughly equal amounts. Negative energy causes decay, wear, breakdown, and death; positive energy causes organization, healing, growth, and life. The lifeforce of a creature is a sort of unseen mechanism that harvests positive energy (or negative, if it's an undead creature) from the environment, though it doesn't generally work unless it's anchored to the body and controlled by a soul (or something similar but less potent, for nonsapient lifeforms). In order to stay alive, grow, and heal, living creatures generally maintain an imbalanced energy state with more positive than negative energy inside their bodies.
When a creature dies, its lifeforce breaks down and its soul departs (or is destroyed, drained away, etc, depending on its nature and cause of death). Either way, without lifeforce the body basically becomes an object. Unimpeded by the lifeforce, entropy gradually shifts the body into equilbrium with its environment by redistributing some positive energy out of it and more negative energy into it; this influx of negative energy is why dead bodies decay more rapidly. That same outflow of positive energy has to go somewhere, so most of it gets concentrated into its immediate environment. This is why dead bodies tend to fertilize trees and plants: they are basically drinking up the excess positive energy leaking out of the corpse as it strives to reach energy equilibrium.
The reason why corpses often spread disease is also related to this cycle: evil particles (which are the cause of diseases) tend to be attracted to concentrations of negative energy (because evil likes destruction). So when bodies decay and negative energy grows more concentrated in them, any evil particles in the area tend to be drawn to them, where diseases then manifest from the higher concentrations of evil.
Knowledge (arcana), (nobility & royalty), or (religion), or Profession (soldier) DC14:
MARSUB, the Terolus Human Military's mage division, is broadly categorized into arcanists and chaplains, though this reflects the nature of their powers and social position more than their military function. Their arcanists are viewed with wary awe by most other divisions, particularly infantry and sailors, while chaplains are often beloved and trusted as advisors, healers, and undertakers.
