Vidya, in Sanskrit, means knowledge. But it is not about the knowledge we learn from books at school, that would be information. The knowledge that Vidya refers to is about the Self. Is the knowledge of differentiating what's real from what is not, what is eternal from what is not, what is material from what is ephemeral. Avidya is the lack of that knowledge, or the wrong knowledge. Is the perception through a veil (called Maya), and as Patanjali explains in Yoga Sutras, it is the root of all suffering, the ignorance of the self is the origin of the identification with the thoughts, with the ego, with what we learn, what we experience, and so we perceive the Self through the eyes of the pleasure, the desires, the pain, the fears... we just see the interpretation and we forget that there is something else beyond the window from which we are looking through. That is why most yoga practices are intended to develop self observation. This study of the Self makes the seeds of practice grow and expand to their maximum potential. #avidya #selfstudy #knowledgeoftheself #ignoranceoftheself #yogasutras #yogasutrasofpatanjali #yogaphilosophy #yogaisequanimity (at Balance Yoga Studio)
