Essential Oils
by Victoria Safley
Getting ready to pick an essential oil can be hard and very confusing. Not only do they have a ton to pick from, each scent has their own purpose. Through my time experimenting with different oils and researching each scent, this is what I have found to be true. Listed below are some of my favorite oils with the benefits that help me the most.
Chamomile: Chamomile tea is one of my favorites and the tea itself is also used to remedy health issues. The scent of chamomile can reduce stress and anxiety and even help promote better sleep. When using it in a lotion, it can aid as an anti-inflammatory especially for muscle soreness and even a bug bite.
Citronella: Even though citronella is most commonly known as an insect repellent, the smell itself can also ease a headache, relax the body along with the nervous system, and fight fatigue.
Eucalyptus: Eucalyptus has great benefits and is especially great for females. It helps with menstrual cramping and mental exhaustion. It also aids the immune and respiratory system, clearing sinuses and relieving headaches.
Grapefruit: This one is my favorite to use on my skin. I often face breakouts and when mixing grapefruit oil with my face toner and lotion, it clears my blemishes and removes extra oil. It is also great for a boost of energy and immune support.
Jasmine: Jasmine is the best for the mind. It boosts confidence and creativity. I personally love adding it my everyday perfume.
Lavender: I’m someone who bruises easily and gets burnt easily when out in the sun, so I loved finding out lavender helps with both of those. It also promotes a good night’s sleep and will soothe any irritated and sensitive skin.
Lemon: Best used for household cleaners or air fresheners. It can also be used as a face toner if you have oily or dull skin. Works well to try and stop insomnia too.
Peppermint: It is used for your mental state. It helps with focus, memory, and alertness. Also helps with allergies, common cold, bloating, cramps, motion sickness, or an upset stomach. (I was shocked to find out ants hate the smell of peppermint and last summer when my house was raided by ants, I pulled out the peppermint and to my surprise, it actually works.)
Tea tree: This one is also great to use on skin. It clears blemishes, scars, and age spots. Tea tree may not be commonly known, but it holds some of the most benefits. Not only does it help with skin, it helps with dandruff, prevents infection, and allows quick healing. It boosts the immune system and relieves the respiratory system. You can also add it to household cleaners, deodorants, and insect repellents.
Vanilla: Reduces stress, anxiety, and anger by having a positive effect on the nervous system. It also works great on everyday hair care regimes. (When I smell vanilla, it always makes me think of something yummy or a warm, cozy memory.)
