The first time it happens, it’s an accident. He's… almost sure. As soon as he sees Captain America on the horizon, his fingers just naturally transition from the end of Are You With Me to The Star Spangled Man With A Plan with no conscious decision on his part. It even ends up sounding somewhat cool, and his audience erupts in surprised laughter that turns into cheers as soon as they notice the reason for the change breezing past behind them.

It’s the chuckle that does it, not the condescending ableism of the words. The thing that pushes them over the edge, even Steven losing his objectivity for a moment.

“The man is clearly insane!” Harrow finishes, and Marc-

Marc swings.

So. I did a thing. Apparently I’m a multishipper now? And a comic-reading one, at that 😂

There’s a rasping sound, and it takes Steven a second to realize that it’s past-Marc, laughing. Blood bubbles on his lips as he chokes out, “What the hell are you?”

Nat smirks. “Steve, you do know cats need to eat regular food, too?”

“I do!” Steve squawks, indignant. “What kind of parent do you think I am?” She’s outright laughing at him now, great. “Oh come on, like you’re not all ready to be the best kitty aunt ever?” 

She shrugs, unrepentant. Obviously.

“Soooo I might’ve gone a little overboard,” Steve admits, surveying the boxes strewn all over the living room and kitchen. 

Nat rolls her eyes at him, lips curling up in exasperation. “No, really?” she deadpans, going to open the closest box. It’s stuffed full of cat treats, one of pretty much every kind he could find, and she spreads them all over the counter, sorting them by brand. She laughs. “Steve, you do know cats need to eat regular food, too?”

He wakes up already dialing the number, chest heaving, tears streaming down his face.

“This is Steve Rogers. Leave a message after the beep.”

The voice is different, yet somehow exactly the same. Big or small, old or young, it never mattered. Just hearing the recording makes something in him unclench.

He hates that he misses it: the absolute blank slate that he used to become. It feels preferable, at times, to this limbo somewhere between resigned anticipation and overwhelming guilt. 

There’s no escape for him, not anymore. No Chair to take it all away, and certainly no Steve to come to his rescue like a knight in garish red, white and blue.
