More owlies

Remember that I made these owls a little while ago? Well, a friend of my mom, Elvira, wanted to make them aswell. Since she's Dutch and doesn't know the USA terms, I decided to translate the pattern for her. Before I did, I did find a similar pattern in Dutch, and I've sent her that one. She called my mom two days later telling her that she had trouble with the pattern, and asked if I could help. Luckily for her I was with my parents at that time. So she came over and I helped her (using the 'original' English pattern by Bunny Mummy). This happened yesterday. Today she came over again, and this time I had translated the Bunny Mummy pattern to Dutch for her. Elvira, my mom and I started making an owl this afternoon. With a little help they also figured out the pattern, and the results are actually pretty nice. 

The one in the top right is Elvira's, the one on the bottom right is my mom's. I made the other two. They differ quite a bit in size, as you can see. I did the blue one with a 3,5 mm hook, and the pink one with a 3 mm hook. What a difference it makes! Elvira and my mom both used a 3,5 mm hook, and as you can see my mom's work is a lot tighter. 

The blue one is for my boyfriend's grandma. I gave the yellow one (from the previous post) to my boyfriend's mom, and she uses it as a keychain now. His grandmother has asked multiple times 'Who made it? It's so nice!', so I decided to make her one. I don't know yet where the pink one will end up, but I'm sure it'll find a nice new home soon.

Protected earphones

Who doesn't know the problem of tangled earphones? The solution; crochet around the wires of the earphones. I came up with the idea a while ago, but I kept forgetting about doing it. Just last night I was wondering what I could do, and I was playing with my earphones. So, why not now? It was a real quick project, it took me less than an hour. And it looks so colorful right now!

Want to know how I did it? 

What you need:

Earphones

Crochet hook (I used a 3mm hook)

Yarn, in any color you like. (I used Katia Capri Print for the bottom part, and Lana Grossa Cotone for the plain ones.)

What you need to do:

Put a slip knot on your hook. 

Make a slip stitch around the cable to secure your yarn around it.

Crochet single crochet stitches around the cable until you reach the end. 

Fasten off. Use a needle to work away the two loose strands of yarn (at the beginning and end of your wire).

Repeat this for the other parts of your wires.

Tadaaa! Your earphones are protected and won't tangle again (or, at least, not as quick). And also, this is my very first tutorial! Yeeey :D

Bunny for a little baby

Remember the bunnies I made for my mom? No? Well, you can see them here. My mom put them on a speaker in our living room. A friend of my mom dropped by a while ago, and see saw them. See asked me if I wanted to make one for the baby her brother and his girlfriend were expecting. Of course I wanted to make one for her! See wanted the bunny to be blue and white, since the baby was going to be a boy. I knew I had the same yarn as I used for the other two bunnies, not only in pink, but also in blue. So I decided that was the blue the bunny was going to be:

This happened a month or two ago, and as of now the little baby boy is a month old. Since he lives in Austria, his aunt was just this week able to give him his little bunny. I hope little Moritz and his parents are happy with it. Welcome in this world, Moritz.

Squids for premature babies

Here, in The Netherlands, there is a project called 'Inktvisjes voor couveuse kindjes' or, in English 'Squids for incubator babies'. It's a project that originated in Denmark, and is now running in Denmark, Sweden, The Netherlands and Belgium. A lot of women, and some men, have bundled their crochet strength to provide each incubated baby a squid. These squids help the baby relax, probably because the tentacles feel like the umbilical cord the baby could hold while still in the womb. Babies that have an infuse are also less likely to pull this out, because they have the tentacles to pull on. 

Why am I telling you this? Well, because my mom and I are just two of these women who crochet for these tiny kids. I will show you a few of my squids (I have made 21 in total right now (august 7th, 2014)). 

This one is called Rosa, and it was my very first squid. As you scroll down you will see that I have made a huge progress in the way my squids look. 

These are Ryan & Koda, my numbers 4 & 5. Can you already see the difference? Sadly, these two weren't approved to go to the little babies, because their tentacles are too long. But they have probably made a brother or sister very happy by now! 

Meet Lily & Ted (yes, How I Met Your Mother inspired names), my numbers 14 & 15. They are so called 'spiral squids', because their bodies are made out of multiple colors of yarn. Like this it looks like every round has a different color. 

Here are my latest six squids. I made them during our vacation in Austria, and they aren't stuffed yet. Numbers 16, 17, 20 & 21 have Disney inspired names (from Aladdin and Toy Story). Evalina and Nathalie are two sweet girls I met in Austria, and I thought they deserved it to have a squid named after them.

Now you know what I do for charity, and what my 'biggest' project until now was/is. I will keep you updated on the squids I make, and if they get through their check-ups, before they can go to the children. Just search for the tag 'Squids' and you will find all my posts about them.
