Kogalymavia Flight 9268 - Sinai, Egypt - 10/31/2015 - 224 fatalities (no survivors).

The Airbus 321 departed Sharm el-Sheikh International Airport for Saint Petersburg and reached cruising altitude before the crash.  The tail section was found separate from the main wreckage (see map via AVH).  The wings appear to have been intact at impact.

The aircraft was involved in a tailstrike incident in 2001.

Russian airline officials deny mechanical failure; Egypt denies terrorism.  FYW advises that neutral sites such as AV Herald be consulted for facts until the investigation reaches a conclusion.

UPDATE:  Russian investigation is indicating the presence of explosives.

Wiadomość z sieci: Pieskow (rzecznik Kremla – JW) pytany przez dziennikarzy, czy przyczyną sobotniej katastrofy samolotu Airbus A321, należącego do rosyjskich linii czarterowych Kogalymavia, znanych też jako Metrojet, mógł być zamach terrorystyczny odparł, że nie można tego wykluczyć.

Nie ma obecnie żadnych podstaw, by wykluczyć jakąkolwiek wersję odnośnie do sobotniej katastrofy…

Russian airline blames Egypt crash on 'external' factors

The Russian passenger jet that crashed in Egypt killing all 224 people on board came down due to "external" factors, the airline said Monday, as relatives began identifying their loved ones in Saint Petersburg. Senior Kogalymavia executive Alexander Smirnov said that "no technical failures" could account for why the Airbus 321 would have broken up in mid-air, as investigators have said happened.
