Kokekokko! There are days when you let the chicken lead you through a meal.
Kokekokko
Sorry for the lack of posts recently, I've been really caught up between classes and work. During my little absence, I've ended up at a few restaurants, mostly in Little Tokyo. And one of my favorite things to eat is Japanese Izakaya, which includes Yakitori aka skewers. One spot to grab some delicious skewers is Kokekokko. Unique name for a restaurant that serves unique food. Izakaya are Japanese restaurants that serve drinks (beer and sake), and accompany the drinks with small dishes, almost like tapas style. I guess you can call it some sort of a Japanese gastropub.Yakitori are those delicious chicken skewers that many are familiar with. The chef preparing delicious yakitori on his grill. The place setting is extremely simple and straightforward. Everyone starts the meal with an Otoshi of Marinated Daikon and Ground Chicken. Absolutely delicious! I wish all amuse bouches are as simple and as great as this. The accompanying salad with the set meal is pretty average. And to be honest, a bit disappointing. Looks like they just opened a bag of Dole Pre-Made Iceberg Salad. Throw in a bit of ginger sauce, and you can call it Japanese. Not pictured: A bowl of clean chicken broth. Now onto the Yakitori! We started with the Chicken Breast (medium rare) with Wasabi. Yes I said medium rare, meaning it's still pink inside. The country has an absolutely ridiculous phobia of chicken that's even a hint of pink. I'm not saying to go around and eat your chicken rare, but if it's an organic and free range, I say go ahead.. live dangerously. Next up is a pair that is for the more adventurous eaters. But to be honest, if you didn't let people know what part of the chicken it was, they would scarf these babies down without second guessing. The first (right) is chicken liver, which is nothing like my beloved foie gras. The strong metallic/iron taste goes well with the sweet glaze. Then we get to the Chicken Gizzard, which has a bit of an abnormal texture. It's crunchier than it looks and has a toothy bite to it. Next up, we have one of my favorite Yakitori, Chicken Heart. Actually, I prefer Fatty Heart, but this will do. The strong flavor is paired with a snappy bite, absolutely amazing. Quail Eggs! Nom nom nom. Nothing uniquely special about this dish, but it's done right and the flavor is there. For the less adventurous eaters, there's always Grilled Chicken with Onion. I mean, don't get me wrong, it's good, but a bit boring. Continuing on our little freight train of delicious yet boring, are the Chicken Meatballs. Yea, they're juicy and flavorful, but when I eat Yakitori, I crave the exotics. Now this is a bit better, some Chicken Wrapped Zucchini. The zucchini is cooked till it's absolutely tender and a thin film of chicken is wrapped around it to provide an extra depth of flavor. Wonderfully executed. Another fun skewer, the Chicken Wrapped Okra. Similar to the zucchini, the okra is extremely tender and the chicken is a perfect complement. Now one of most people's favorite, and every cardiologist's most hated. Chicken Skin. The skin is grilled until it's crunchy, but still retains that unctuous fatty texture. Call me a fatty, but I'm in love. Finally, we have our last skewer. An order of Chicken Thighs, which inevitably is placed on the "delicious yet boring" list. A bit of a nibbler and difficult to eat compared to the rest, but I guess it's a must get.
Kokekokko Scores: Food: 7/10 - I know Yakitori is supposed to be chicken, but would a little beef or pork hurt?
Restaurant Environment: 8.5/10 - The Izakaya experience is one everyone has to try. Spending good time with friends over delectable food and refreshing beer, what's not to like?
Service: 8/10 - Fun servers that even help me exaggeratedly plate the dish to look more appetizing, because they knew I was blogging. It was entertaining the first time, but it got a bit old.
Value: 7/10 - This is always a bit difficult for me, but when someone tells you each skewer is roughly $2-3, you think it's an absolute bargain. But when you remember you have to order roughly 10-15 of them to fulfill your appetite, you're a bit taken back.
Overall: 7.5/10
