"Hold still, Izaya. You’re making it impossible to take your pictures. I really feel like a holdover of the last generation, struggling with the camera button like this on these newer phones. Oh-oh there I almost got it, awe come on.”

Shinra was talking mostly to himself, as actually trying to get Izaya to cooperate was very much akin to trying to get a wolverine to stand still, and Shinra knew this fact. Yet he did anyway engaging in pointless frivolity was one of his many quirks. Even though his new phone had been pushed away, he found himself fiddling with it again inevitably. It gave his hands something to do at least while the two of them were walking together at this late hour, and Shinra was the energetic type of person who needed some part of his body to always be in motion.

“So what is this you’re taking me too again? An anti-nonhuman society? I still don’t think I quite get it, is it like the color gangs? Or maybe something like the corporations that my father and namie-san worked for?”

Shinra was making wild guesses at this point, but some part of him intuitively knew. Which of his guesses were more accurate and which were less. He raised his phone finally and turned it back around, and even knowing this was a bad idea and how touchy Izaya was immediately slung his arm over the man’s shoulder and pulled him closer.

“Hey Izaya, let’s take one of those selfies to commemorate our first day hanging out together as friends in this new town. That’s something friends do, right”

the ivory mist

This probably isn’t the first time he’s woken up in some unfamiliar place in his PJs, but this is certainly the first time he’s woken up in some unfamiliar place in his PJs next to three other people, in a room filled with ghosts.

A white mist is snaking through the rotting shack, leaving his tongue thick with the taste of frost. It’s cold. There’s a few white smears that look like the ghosts out of Gene’s old harvest festival books, and everyone seems just as confused as he is.

“What the...?”

The other two aren’t awake yet. There’s a girl in a maid outfit of all things, and a man wearing a night cap and gown from two hundred years ago. To his right, there’s this fellow who seems to be having a bit of a laugh at the situation. The ghosts aren’t offering any information, so Teo rubs his eyes and asks:

“Is this normal? For this city?”

Shinra had one absolute fear, something that he thought if it ever came to pass would absolutely break him. Then it did. His love disappeared from this world, but he was still here. Shinra could not understand, the meaning behind his current functionality, for what purpose did his heart continue to beat if not for Celty? 

He didn’t receive an answer, but rather an invitation. By a man in a labcoat just like his own, to come join in a city. For him, whose entire world of cause and effect revolved around Celty, instantly concluded Celty must be waiting for him there. That was how long ago?

The answer to that question did not matter, because the flow of time had no meaning without Celty.  He still was capable of waking the streets alone, becase he  walked with purpose. There was a certain man who would show up at random intervals and spout words like a prophet just enough to convince those who heard him he knew everything that was going on, or perhaps he was even behind it. Shinra knew him as a friend, and knew he was not as unpredictable as he thought. If you threw a bundle of hornets into a crowd, the outcome was easy to guess. Which is why Shinra, walked that day all the way to sector one, to a mainstreet where many of the people walking through their day converged at once. It reminded him of the main square in Ikebukuro, almost perpetually packed with crowds. Just as he reminisced of the past a bit he saw it, a familiar white fluff of a fur collar. He moved to catch up.

“Hello again Izaya, it’s been awhile. Let’s catch up over a hot pot party.”

 “This place is simply... amazing, isn’t it?” 

Some things, they don’t have a clear starting point.

And so they just happen. Independently of how quickly or slowly they do, they happen, and that’s all. It’s the weird part of the city, where people lean against the guardrails and consider impossibilities, turning over schemes in their minds and trying to adapt themselves with optimistic thoughts to the radical change in their lives.  “It really is,” and so the boy continues, stars burning in his eyes light-years away. They say black holes come from these, scientists. The best of them. “I’ve been here for a week or so, not all that accustomed to everything, but-- have you seen this?”

He angles his head down, as if pointing towards what’s below the bridge: people. It’s not enough ‘from above’ to transform them all into a homogeneous mass of antlike silhouettes; it’s just high enough to watch. Observe everything, pay attention to the normal, the abnormal, the exceptional. Enough to make him go on, voice gaining an effusive touch with each syllabe, “Everytime you close your eyes, you’ll see someone new. People, and I’m not even starting to talk about all the creatures that I’ve never seen in my life. All here! I’ve been somewhere similar, you know, the last thing I remember before waking up here--”

Some things, they don’t have to be shared right away. 

And so they die before they leave a pair of thin, pale lips. There is a short moment of silence, and he finally turns around to face him, the only one who’s still around. He looks threatening, somehow. Threatening, but invested. “Um... I’m sorry. I’ve probably, ah, bored you to death, haven’t I? Oh, but there’s something I’ve been meaning to ask... if you don’t mind.” 

Because this guy’s still here. (Most people would’ve left. Most people have left. Here, now, before, then. And all other grammatical tenses.)

“If there’s a purpose, a meaning, for all of this... If this experiment is truly for the sake of something greater...”

“What do you think they brought you here for?”

Ravio is a lot of things, but he’s never been stupid.

He’d been capable of surviving for so long in Lorule because of his extreme resourcefulness, so when he once again finds himself in the Hive, he busies himself with what he knows best--merchantry. If he starts out selling small things that are cheap but quite high in demand, he’ll garner the cash and customer base he needs to branch out. Oh yes, he knows all about trade, perhaps more than Link knows about swords and sorcery.

What he doesn’t know is that he’s picked the wrong person to sweet talk. Ravio’s not exactly a liar, but any shopkeeper knows how to hawk wares.

“Hey. Hey, you! Yeah, you buddy. C’mere a sec. Got something to show you. Some prime stuff you can only get in Sector One at just the right hour.”

Ravio looks left and right as he speaks, hood pulled low over his eyes. Sheerow flutters around his head like a tiny winged feather duster.

“So, you ready? Don’t know why I’m asking. Even if you’re not, I’m gonna show you anyway. See these?” He opened his purple robe to reveal rows of familiar red and brown boxes hanging therein. “Some high quality stuff, and it could be yours! Whaddaya say, pal? I’m willing to haggle. Support your local businesses!”

"Even a Matsui Stick Can't Handle Some Kinds of Dirt."

There are two places Badou vowed to never investigate ever again. Because he’s still working on this policy of Not Getting Into Deep Shit That’ll Get Him Killed. 

Now, as he ducks inside a little known meat locker in some abandoned building, he....really, really figures he needs to rework everything. He’s had too many close calls and he can’t have someone save him every week.

Badou isn’t a damsel. Just a curious little bastard with too sticky of fingers. Infiltrating a cult? Check. Not getting caught? That one’s up in the air, as of now. He’s pretty sure he wasn’t seen but. They definitely know someone was there.

So for now? The teen waits.

Hive City is bigger than any place he’s even so much as heard of back in his home world of Terca Lumireis, and what time he’s spent trying to familiarize himself to his new environment has still left several districts yet unseen. But walking about to take in the sights and sounds of a realm so different from his own is a sort of learning experience and adventure both, and his time is better spent acclimatizing himself to his new environment rather than bemoaning his arrival here.

It’s this self-driven tour of the city that brings Flynn to a park blessed with lush greens and even a beautiful fountain, one that runs, like all else does in this city, without the aid of blastia and blastia cores. The relief he feels because of it still gleams clearly in bright blue eyes by the time he approaches a bench situated near the waters and occupied only by a single man.

“Would you mind if I took a seat here?” he asks, gesturing to the half of the bench left unclaimed. Though the park and its amenities seem to be open for free and public use, he sees no harm in asking nonetheless; there is rarely, if ever, anything to lose by being polite, after all.
