Okay. It's been a week and no one else has pointed this out, so I'mma do it myself. Was this a reference to KoKo, Brainy's monkey in the cartoons and comics? I mean, that brainy was meant to be a direct reference to comic book Brainy, so it'd make sense.

Koko a lab monkey recently rescued by the DEO has attached itself to Brainy's head and will not let anyone come within 3 feet of Brainy or interrupt him when he is talking. Everyone is frustrated but Brainy who believes the creature understands his brilliance.

“So the monkey’s still there, huh?”

“Indeed,” Brainy replied, reaching up to check on the monkey who had perched on his head and refused to come down. “I have named him Koko.”

“You do realize we can’t keep him,” Alex said warily. She tried to step forward, but Koko made a hissing noise that she hadn’t known monkeys could make, and she took a step back.

“I don’t see why not,” Brainy replied. “Koko has been experimented on with unknown results. We cannot release him into the wild, and it would be irresponsible to pass him onto someone else without giving them knowledge of what they’re getting into. As we don’t know what they’d be getting into, it would be irresponsible to pass him onto someone else, full stop. Thus, it makes the most sense for us to keep him.”

“Yeah, except for the fact that that demon monkey hates everyone but you.”

“He’s not a demon,” Brainy said, sounding slightly wounded. “Koko simply appreciates me.”

“Brainy, he won’t let anyone get within three feet of you.”

“He is protective. It’s not-”

“No, Brainy,” Alex interrupted, or at least she tried to. The second her voice cut in over Brainy’s, Koko started making an angry chittering noise. Alex stopped talking, shocked, and Koko relaxed, looking more satisfied than she thought a monkey should be able to look.

“I will keep him myself,” Brainy offered. “I can take care of him.”

“Considering how much he hates everyone else, you’ll have to,” Alex said, wondering exactly how much trouble this monkey was going to make. She expected it would be a lot. But the monkey did like Brainy, and Brainy did have a point about passing it on, and it did make Brainy smile like nothing else could, so...

“You’ll have to take complete care of him,” Alex said, feeling oddly like a mother relenting on the topic of a child getting a dog.

“I will,” Brainy promised. “Koko will want for nothing.”

Alex sighed and turned around, leaving the lab. J’onn never had to deal with this stuff when he was director, and to be honest, Alex thought that was very, very unfair.

Really any legion of superheroes material, but especially Brainiac 5 and Koko.
