Kokomi was hopelessly in love with the Raiden Shogun herself. It was a bad idea, she was fully aware, but her love had transcended all of the doubts she had. The keyword was had, of course. Kokomi had been in love with the Raiden Shogun, and she had been devoted to her just as everyone else in Inazuma had. Things had...changed over the years though. Things had changed so exponentially that Kokomi forced herself to stop loving the Shogun, but things hadn’t always been this way. Things hadn’t always been so tense in Inazuma, and at one point she had even called the Shogun her lover. There was even some point that she had called her Baal.
In the past things weren’t so hard. Kokomi still lived on Watatsumi island, although the resistance hadn’t been formed. There wasn’t any need to have a resistance, as Baal’s vision decree hadn’t been implemented yet. Although tensions were starting to rise, Baal herself visited the island every so often. Even if her people were wary, Kokomi had always been polite and hospitable towards the Shogun. She handled her presence with grace, allowing her to stay at the Sangonomiya Shrine for however long she wished.
Baal had been cautious at first, but she wasn’t aggressive by any means. She was radiant though. Baal handled herself with grace; every movement was planned, and every step was taken with the utmost caution. Despite her terrifying exterior, she was a rather cool and level headed woman. And as Kokomi got to know her, she found herself growing closer to the Shogun. At some point she had taken her on a stroll through the shrine’s garden.
It was a warm day, a light sprinkle dusting the grounds of Watatsumi island. Baal had been peering outside at the soft rain, hovering near the window like a child who had seen their first snow. And Kokomi had come to check on her, noticing her looking out the window with a sort of fond smile on her face. For as much as Baal seemed to be scary at first, she had this soft, sort of wondrous side of her. It was almost as if she didn’t have the chance to do trivial things such as take strolls through the garden.
Kokomi walked delicately, trying not to spook the Shogun as she approached. When Baal’s head turned, eyes wide with wonder, Kokomi fought back a blush. She found herself thinking that she was almost...cute. But she didn’t have time to ponder those feelings before Baal spoke.
“Is there something you need?” The Shogun asked softly, although there was a tone of iciness to her voice. Kokomi knew she didn’t mean it though, she was merely a person who didn’t know how to express herself.
“Nothing in particular,” Kokomi said lightly, moving gracefully to stand beside Baal at the window. Their hands brushed in the way that they had been doing for a while now, and Kokomi fought back the urge to take ahold of her hand and kiss the smooth skin on the back of it. “Did you wish to go outside, Shogun?”
Baal gave her a sharp look, moving her hand away slightly so they were no longer brushing. “Baal.” She corrected, moving past the window and towards the door. Kokomi took it as a sign to follow her, although she was a little shocked to have been corrected in such a firm manner. Were they really close enough to call each other by first names? Kokomi wasn’t entirely sure, but if she wished it…
“Yes...Baal,” The word felt foreign on her tongue. “Shall we go outside then?” She gestured towards the door, opening it for the Shogun when she received a curt nod. “It’s lovely out today, even the rain is warm.” She hummed, waiting for Baal to go outside before she followed her, shutting the door behind them gently.
Baal seemed to relish the feeling of the rain hitting her skin, jumping at first, but then relaxing and even gaining the smallest of smiles on her face. Had she just never experienced rain before? Or had she simply not had time to ever enjoy it like this before?
Either way, Kokomi moved slowly, waiting for Baal to catch up with her before she actually started walking. The garden was beautiful this time of year, all sorts of flowers springing up in the garden, and Baal seemed to be enraptured by the beauty of it all. She hadn’t been on Watatsumi island during spring until now, so Kokomi could understand her wonder. The first time she had seen the flowers had been when she was a little girl, and the beauty of the flowers was unmatched by any. She felt almost as if Baal’s beauty compared to the flowers, and that was a high compliment from her. Not just anyone received such high praise from Kokomi.
In the corner of the garden was a dark purple flower. It reminded Kokomi of Baal’s hair, and as she drifted towards the flower, she heard a voice speaking behind her.
“What are you doing?” Baal asked, almost suspiciously. She followed behind Kokomi like a dog, pausing when she saw the woman pluck the flower from the ground. “The flower…I see.”
Kokomi turned, standing on her tippy toes in order to tuck the flower behind Baal’s hair. The Shogun stiffened at first, but relaxed once she realized what was happening. She looked uncomfortable for a second, unsure of how to handle the gentle affection of having a flower tucked behind her ear. “Oh…” Baal trailed off, touching the flower delicately once Kokomi pulled away, a serene smile on her face. “Thank you. For the flower.” She said stiffly, turning away for a moment. Kokomi could tell that she was a little flustered, and it made her…happy. It was nice seeing Baal flustered.
“Of course,” Kokomi smiled, holding out her hand cautiously. She was pleasantly surprised when Baal took her hand. Her hand was shockingly smooth and even softer than she imagined.
And as the two walked back inside, it was an unspoken start of something. And for a while, it was wonderful. They had spent some of their nights under the stars, gently kissing and exploring each other.
But things weren’t always that nice. As things got worse, so did their relationship. Baal stopped visiting as much, and she started drifting away, eventually issuing the vision decree, and instructing Kujou Sara to Watatsumi island to shut down the resistance. Their relationship had gone from gentle touches and hand holding to enemies on the opposing side of a war. Their lives had been completely changed, and they were no longer the people they once were. The Shogun wouldn’t even show her face in Watatsumi island anymore, too cowardly to show up and face Kokomi once more.
As Kokomi sunk into her bed after a long day, she realized that the person she once knew was gone, replaced by a ruthless and power hungry woman who would stop at nothing to achieve what she wanted. She couldn’t help but think of her though. Think of Baal instead of The Shogun. The person she once knew.
