Postcard promoting record label Kokopop’s showcase night at Sideshows by the Seashore on Coney Island, New York on August 14, 1992.
Kokopop was a label run by Kramer, of Shimmy Disc and Bongwater fame, supposedly a major-label-fueled venture kickstarted to provide some advance indie cred to one or more new artists signed to that major. (IIRC it was the band 700 Miles, who shortly after their Kokopop single put out a full album on RCA/BMG.)
Anyway, all that corporate cash at least allowed for putting out records by actual indie bands, like Nothing Painted Blue, April March and Sassy magazine staff band Chia Pet... all of whom, according to this postcard were “not” playing this particular gig. But hey, Small Factory were on the bill, even though Kokopop never put out any of their records.
I think I missed this show, likely because I was back home in the Boston area for the summer after my first year of college in New York. But I did catch a couple of other gigs there that fall, including a memorable one featuring Slant 6, which I still have a tape of in my live recording collection.
