The Kokufu-ten is the world's most prestigious bonsai exhibition, and 2026 marks its historic 100th edition. First held in 1927, it was established by the Nippon Bonsai Association to elevate bonsai to a recognized art form. Held each February at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, the four-day event showcases approximately 200 exceptional trees selected from hundreds of submissions. Acceptance into the Kokufu-ten is considered the highest honor in the bonsai world—only specimens demonstrating perfect balance, aged character, and masterful cultivation are chosen.
