(HAHA!) Nichts, was man in dem Moment gesagt hätte. Auch ich erlebe gerade eine Art Geburtsschmerzen und ich weiß, dass ich mich in einem Jahr oder vielen nur noch unscharf…

Myths vs Realities of Kollegium Living
In Denmark, there are no traditional dormitories or central campus housing for the universities. Because the Danes can pursue higher education at any age and usually never directly following high school graduation, the erection of dormitories is useless. The closest variant to campus housing would be a kollegium which is a fancy word referring to an apartment. In my Kollegium, you have your own suite with your own personal bathroom and some rooms are equipped with balconies.
Space
“I won’t have a lot of space either way, so I should go for a private room”
Okay, this is so false. Especially with my room. There’s really almost too much space. Compared to a single dorm room back at my home university this would be considered a double. The room comes equipped with 3-4 lamps (standing and desk), a lounge chair, a desk (with a chair), and a shelf.
My room came with a twin xl bed and DIS provided the bedding linens and one pillow. I bought an extra pillow from the nearby stores for a really cheap price. DIS also provided a towel and face cloth for showering needs, but you need to buy your own soap and other amenities.
To get an actual comparison for space, I managed to fit a queen air mattress with all my existing furniture with enough room to move around.
Cleaning
“They are sure to have a cleaning service for the rooms, right?”
Wrong again. Kollegium living is really built for the individual that is independent. You are your own maid and cook. But fear not, DIS provides you with cleaning supplies. My room came with a bulk supply of sponges and scrubbers, a bucket, disposable (or reusable??) cleaning cloths, and varying chemicals to clean your toilet, shower, and kitchen.
That being said, you are expected to keep your space tidy and clean for the most part. DIS Housing has room checks twice a semester to ensure that you are taking care of the space/didn’t violate the housing contract.
The shower has a habit of leaking into the main part of the room, so I purchased a bathmat to curve this tendency and save myself a fine from DIS housing at the end of the semester.
Food
“I can stretch that food stipend to last me the whole stay”
No, you cannot. Our stipend was a small amount compared to the living expenses necessary to live in Denmark and it is just not possible to stretch your money’s worth in relation to food in Cope. Love you Cope, but you’re extremely expensive.
Here’s the thing you can budget food wise with this city if you avoid going out every single day, have a communal dinner with your Kollegium building mates, and make friends with host families.
The best residence option (with a food stipend) is Rented Room. Surprise! Even though I had my reservations about the rented room option is the best choice because you can luck out and the “landlord” could allow you to use basic necessities like eggs, bread, milk, etc. is already provided. Your first grocery bill in a kollegium is close to $100 because you need to buy those necessities.
“Do I have to buy utensils? Should I pack pans?”
This was arguably the most asked question in our facebook group prearrival. For the most part, your kitchenette comes “fully stocked”. What does “fully stocked” mean? Before we get there let’s first discuss the different kollegium types. Depending on your specific kollegium, you will either have a kitchenette is within your room or shared among several residents. My specific kollegium has a kitchenette in the room which means I have two electric burners, sink, and a fridge all for my personal use. The kollegium shares an oven for the building which I haven’t seen used yet, but then again, I would have travel several stories to use it.
My room came with the following kitchen utilities:
1 saucepan
1 pot
2 plates
2 bowls
1 corkscrew
2 knives
2 forks
2 spoons
2 butcher knives (varying sizes)
2-3 ladle spoons
1 cutting board
1 set of Tupperware
Water Kettle
Microwave
Scissors
The items I purchased that weren’t provided:
Toaster
Dish washing liquid
Paper towels
Social
“I will always have something to do. It’ll be a party 24/7.”
Differing to dorm life back in the states, your kollegium isn’t a space for constant partying with other DIS students. In reality, you won’t meet a lot of DIS students just roaming the halls of my kollegium. For the most part, I’ve found out that other DIS students by meeting them at events unrelated to DIS or in class. There are approx.. 50 DIS students in my kollegium and I never see them lol
And for that, I believe DIS recognized the socializing part can actually be a little isolating/ foreign in this housing accommodation. They have implemented the use of SRAs (Social Resident Advisors) that organize social events with the DIS students with other students in the kollegium to create an opportunity for socialization. The SRAs are useful for recommendations for nightlife and exploring your neighborhood. They’re invaluable in those respects.
Transportation
It’s almost crazy how accessible your kollegium could be to DIS and other parts of Copenhagen. No kollegium is in the city/close to DIS that I’m aware of. Those accessibility concerns are best addressed for Living Learning Community residents. My friend lives directly next to the academic buildings and only has a two-minute walk to her Monday morning class. For my kollegium, a bike isn’t necessary because we have a train and bus stop right outside our doors, but a bicycle would be useful to explore the neighborhood and explore the scenic view of the city. For that reason, I rented a bike.
Visitors
“Since I don’t have a roommate, I can have visitors stay over anytime I want!”
Yes and no. Each kollegium have their own rules for visitors and be sure to adhere to those rules. As I understand for my kollegium, overnight visitors are not strictly prohibited which is true for other housing choices.
I will say I’m glad I managed to get a Kollegium for the privacy and independence, but my wallet isn’t so happy for the choice. By far a kollegium is the more expensive choice for housing you can spend close to $100 out of your money to replenish housing necessities or amenities (which would more or less be covered with a homestay for example).
