i guess at least atalanta (and other characters at i guess) show up in other works? even extella is like almost every servant is someone we already knew save for altera and naked math man
you say that, but for both of them that’s only barley an excuse.
fgo may have the opportunity to interact with servants outside the story chapters but its clearly supposed to be able to stand mostly on its own so relying 95% on other materials for characterisation it should be providing itself won’t do. its not limited to servants appearing in other works either: martha had exactly one scene and then died. even far later in the game fergus has maybe two scenes in ch america before he’s killed and beowulf had one. a lot of servants are included for the sake of including them rather than to actually write about them
extella is a sequel and did feature most of its cast earlier within its own continuity so it doesn’t have to go into them as much, but the amount of attention it gives its extended cast is laughable. extella’s marketing hyped it up a lot as a team thing and then completely failed to deliver on its actual team dynamics. you could remove 2/3rd of the characters without significantly changing the story because the majority of the cast is only there to inflate the numbers rather than actually play a part of the narrative we are presented with.
not to mention we don’t actually know jack of shit about archimedes?? not a thing about his backstory or motivations beyond ‘math man loves logic and hates humans’??? he’s not a character type that’s in my area of expertise so it might be me not getting him but even with the “”backstory””” in his side story he’s still basically a cheap kirei clone
