Before there was gangster rap, conscious rap, before your favorite cereal box showed up rapping in TV commercials, back when rhymes were funky fresh, there was a DJ spinning records on the turntables providing loud backdrop for the Master of Ceremonies controlling the mic. A band of entertainers descended on the Norwich/New London area from New York and started hosting block parties the summer Dottie and Chester turned Trajan’s age. Chester ran across his father in-law every now and again walking a pattern of straight lines in someone's side yard, his push mower stretched out ahead of him, his silver ponytail dangling from the back of a large straw hat he wore to keep the sun off his face. The thought occurred to stop and help the old man, abandon his route for the day and volunteer his services as assistant yardman. But Tuke was a proud old man, bound to take any offer of help as insulting. Chester had learned above all else to respect Tuke's physical abilities. He eventually passed one day just in time to catch Tuke packing up his gear, the Willis's lawn resting in his wake, perfectly manicured. Chester was out of his truck crouching, helping lift the mower into the back of Tuke's station wagon before either man could take time to reflect on the gesture, to determine whether its intent had been overly gratuitous. “You do nice work," Chester offered, eyeing the lawn from the curbside as Tuke latched the tailgate. “I should have you out to my place sometime." The Unheralded King of Preston Plains Middle #KoPPM ___________________________________________ Apologies for the self promotion, but I grew especially fond of a couple ancillary characters in the course of telling how they influence the main narrative.

Grandpa Tuke shoulders responsibility for piecing his family back together after the death of his daughter’s eldest son. His daughter responds to the tragedy by shutting herself away from the outside world leaving Trajan, the younger brother, to brave the streets on his own.

Luscius Brand is known around town as the most notorious local drug dealer. He finds himself of late battling a crisis of conscience. We find Luscius weighing the prospect of abandoning his violent ways when Trajan stumbles across the aftermath of some of his handiwork, a crew chief who Luscius suspects has gone rogue and the man’s girlfriend gunned down during the height of a snowstorm on their way through Fort Shantok, the Indian burial ground. ___________________________________________ #ReadSoulLit #readingblackout #blacklit #blackbooks #BrownGirlReading #blackhistorymonth #bookstagram 📚

I'm fascinated by truisms, aspects of the fiction writer's life that make their way to the story. Here's another of mine. Our last couple years of HS, my friends and I worked late nights cleaning up at the #publiclibrary and nearby senior center. We did a fair amount of cleaning in between a ton of horsing around and talking about girls 😍. Those nights in many ways shaped who I am today, the writing a minor side effect from days spent in such close proximity to books. #bublishme #bookexcerpt #KoPPM https://www.bublish.com/bubble/stream/12930 ___________________________________________ Trajan didn't mind the work. It gave him something to do with his spare time. He especially liked the vacuuming. The vacuum was like a bloodhound, head down, sniffing out hidden grime. The low-pile textured carpet was chosen to hide visible signs of dirt. But direct the vacuum along the right path, and you were rewarded by the sound of a million loose particles finding a home deep inside the vacuum cleaner bag. The thick, push-broom fiber mat lining the entryway told a buried tale of all that had transpired in the library on any given day: who had paid a visit and in what numbers, what the weather had done outside. On sunny days, the vacuum cleaner unearthed little more than light dust picked up on the walk from the gravel parking lot. Come wintertime, Bloodhound got his fill on the sand and coarse salt left over after each snowstorm. It took two whole weeks vacuuming the same spot for the rush of loose granules to subside. #Repost paying tribute to #instaphotographer @sincerelysyreeta Cliff side. ・・・ He took her by the hand, led her to the edge of a nearby cliff, a granite protrusion littered along its base with dead leaves and fallen tree branches. They inched forward, toed the edge until heartbeats reached high in their throats. They stood silent as the swirling of a most determined wind moved past their ears. “The wind is braver than we are,” he whispered. “But we can be brave like the wind, can stand tall like the trees if we understand our connection to those things.” Come springtime, their pathway was overrun with butterflies as they made their way past fields of wildflowers before slipping beneath the dense tree cover. A ladybug accompanied them on special occasions, tagging along on the back of Dodie's pudgy little hand to rest its wings awhile. Having been cast aside most of his youth—his mouth unmistakably black, his wide nose paired with eyes no one had ever seen, hair they couldn't place—Tuke taught his daughter to appreciate both sides of nature. Birds and bees can be pretentious, pesky, vicious at times. He wanted Dodie to be a butterfly, beautiful in her own right, whether or not the birds appreciated her virtues; he wanted her to be nurturing like the ladybug, attending to everything around her with quiet diligence.
