Joo Younghoon to handle plagiarism issue with Meghan Trainor's "All About That Bass" legally; appoints lawyer
On September 26th, Joo Younghoon revealed to a news platform, "I had asked a South Korean law firm to find me an American lawyer who is well-acquainted with these matters and is also an on-site attorney so that I can appoint him to the case," further stating that they are still waiting for a response from Meghan Trainor's side.
The composer-producer announced his clear stance on the issue and assured that he is adamant on handling this legally.
In July, American singer-songwriter Meghan Trainor released her title track, "All About That Bass," which took the #1 spot on Billboard's Singles Chart for 3 weeks and other notable charts weeks after its release.
However, after the music video for "All About That Bass" was released, listeners found the song eerily similar to Koyote's "Happy Mode," which was composed and produced by Joo Younghoon back in 2006.
Many people are claiming that the hook from Meghan Trainor's "All About That Bass" sounds just like Kim Jongmin's part in Koyote's "Happy Mode" for about 30 whole seconds.
In August, Joo Younghoon stated that many of his acquaintances, even friend from overseas, contacted him asking why he was staying so silent about the whole issue. His acquaintances asked him, "If Korea had plagiarized an American song, there would have been so much chaos, but how come you're not doing anything about this (as a Korean)?"
As Joo Younghoon was made aware about the issue before fans took list of the similarities, it was revealed that he was afraid of being accused a liar for citing the similar keys in its melody.
