My scientist/explorer sweetheart, Korei! They're an OC I made in No Man's Sky and I've had them for a little over 2 years 👉👈
Robots are always want to push the boundaries of the known universe, it's true. Looks like Korei has the task well in hand! Here's to many more years of adventuring for them :D
Muse went on a weird Finding Fate nostalgia trip, and since Finding Fate was the story that eventually led to The Gatekeeper, it wasn’t that much of a stretch for my muse to jump to that story instead, especially since I aged everyone up and I do rather like the story. It gives me that mix of modern writing and fantasy writing where I don’t have to worry about the main character being out of touch with her generation, because she is out of touch with her generation, lol.
I always end up doing cast pictures for these sorts of stories because I feel so bad drawing just one character, and I love seeing how everyone fits together. The Gatekeeper is sort of unique because the characters come from different cultures and eras, so their outfits don’t exactly match one another (unless they’re from the same place). So it’s really fun to see them beside each other!
Honestly, if this were a true cast picture of The Gatekeeper, it would only be the four in the middle there. The other three are characters that show up later in the story, the two girls in the second book, and the boy most likely in the third (unless I can finagle him in the second like I did the blue hair girl, lol).
So anyway, from left to right we have: Elyon Michaelis, Korei Miyamoto, Tobias Jonston, Persephone Porter, Cassandra Astria, Joshua Sterre, and Proserpina Ward.
Elyon comes from a 1920’s inspired world, Korei comes from an Asian inspired world, Tobias and Persey come from a medieval inspired world that’s the hub of all the other worlds, Cassie and Josh come from a colonial America inspired world, and Prophie comes from a steampunk/airship inspired world that doesn’t really have its own era.
Persey is what’s known as a Gatekeeper (hence the title), who is a person who is able to open portals to the different worlds via mirrors. The staff she’s holding is a ceremonial symbol of a Gatekeeper, although it doesn’t appear much in the story. Elyon, Korei, Josh, and Prophie are her Watchers, which are people who are able to open portals as well within a specific region of the worlds, but not ones that people can pass through. Tobias is Persey’s childhood best friend/love interest who has no real connection to the Gatekeeper business, training to become a blacksmith. And Cassie is the lost princess of one of the worlds that Persey befriends on Earth without realizing this fact (spoiler? Lol)
I really like how this one turned out. I used Persey’s red dress rather than the one she’d normally wear when she’s in her original world because red’s her favorite color, and the one she’d normally would wear is a similar color to Cassie’s. Needed diversity. I also assigned each of them a color – Cassie’s is actually purple, but I didn’t like her dress in purple rather than the teal. But I figured I could get away with it because no one else had that color. I also kept thinking that the staff was kinda too much for Persey, but position of Gatekeeper is usually inherited by males, so it would make sense that the staff would be made with a male in mind, not a female. (There’s a curse on the position that Persey happens to fulfil, being the third female Porter born in two thousand years. The Porter family was ‘blessed’ with the first borns always being male, but then cursed that any female born would automatically inherit the power. This lead to a prophesy that the third female Gatekeeper was going to be born with enormous magical power, which they actually didn’t want to happen because the curse was placed on the family by the Black Witch with the sole purpose of stealing those daughter away. Look, it’s complicated and all part of the plot.)
