Meet the Team

“They’re going to love you.  You’re a human, just like them,” Kori assured you as you continued to fret over the idea of meeting her teammates for the first time.

“You see, to me that sounds like reason enough for them to hate me.  Most other people seem to, so I’m not sure how different these guys will be,” you quipped.  You’d already lived your life under a shroud of insecurity, and now dating a beautiful alien princess you were sure that those who loved her would not extend that same feeling to you.  “People always want me to change and not be true to me, and I don’t believe in living behind a mask like that.”

“The mask thing was on purpose, wasn’t it?” Kori questioned.  She always liked your sense of humor, making stupid puns, and she knew that was a coping mechanism for you.  You always tried to put others at ease when you were dealing with your own discomfort.

“Couldn’t resist,” you shrugged.

“And that is not only why I love you, but why Roy and Jason will love you too,” she consoled. “Besides if you feel uncomfortable once we get there, then we’ll leave.  Just please give them a chance.”

You hadn’t realized how much you’d knotted your own fingers together, trying to physically ease your anxiety until you looked down.  Kori seemed to notice just as you did, resting a hand reassuringly on your forearm.

“Okay,” you agreed.  “I’ll go in with no expectation for how they’ll respond to me and we’ll go from there.”

Kori hummed in acknowledgement before wrapping an arm around your shoulders and pulling you close as you waited for your subway stop to come up.  You let her warmth wash over you, letting you know it was going to be okay.  You loved that Kori would guide you just far enough out of your comfort zone to grow, but never so far that you felt alone and helpless.

As you approached your stop, you could see her teammates waiting for you on the platform.  One smiling ear to ear, happy to see his friend so happy, the other with a small smirk, letting his body language do the talking for him.  Even when they spotted you, their demeanors didn’t sour, instead they seemed to grow warmer, ready to accept you like so few people before had.  You may still be running on nerves about meeting the team, but you knew with Kori at your side, it was all going to be okay.

One Thing in Common

Request: Ooo if your doing Roy then can I request a fic where Roy is dating Kori’s younger sister who disposes kori and vice versa?

It always seemed to amaze people how different sisters could be, and it seemed to be even more amazing to the people who knew both of you.  Yes you were Tamaranean and could fly just like your sister, but you didn’t possess all of her skills; you weren’t the warrior she was and couldn’t produce starbolts.  For a long time, it seemed to make you both think that made you less than Kori.  You’d grown past that, but sometimes with the way she would look at you and treat you, you could tell she hadn’t.

You hadn’t even tried to intrude on your sister’s life or partnerships, but somehow your paths had intertwined at a rundown hardware store you’d been helping out at.  Roy had come in looking for a few last minute supplies, and sparks flew.  You were surprised you didn’t up and launch yourself into the atmosphere, you’d been so elated.  His visits became more frequent, and you could tell he was just coming in because he liked talking to you rather than always being out of screws and other small tools.  Before you knew it, the two of you were having dinner together a few nights a week until you became official in your relationship together.

There were no secrets between you and Roy.  You knew about his past and his present, hoping that you may be included in his future.  You weren’t exactly thrilled about the idea of Roy having been with your sister, especially given your strained history, but he was always quick to assure you that he wasn’t judging or comparing you to her.

The day had come, and you were finally moving in together.  You insisted you could handle the heavy lifting on your own, but Roy was just as insistent about getting at least some help.  He tried to put it in a way that he was only doing this to protect your alien status from the world.  You really should have expected it, but you were still caught by surprise when Kori walked in carrying a box of kitchen supplies from your old place.

“You seem to be the reason Roy has been rather secretive about his personal life,” Kori quipped as she looked you up and down. “I can see not much has changed and you’re letting yet another person fight your battles.”

You steeled yourself for the fight you could feel coming, ready to go toe to toe and prove your worth to your sister.  Before you could truly react, Roy had already put himself between the two of you.  It killed you to see the satisfied smirk on her face, having been proven right once again.

“I suppose we have one thing in common,” Kori conceded.  “We both love Roy.”

“Very true,” you agreed. “We don’t have to like each other, but out of respect to him, we should be civil.”

You walked down the stairs together in tense silence.  As you both grabbed the remaining boxes out of the truck, you knew what you had to do.  It wasn’t going to be easy, but things that were worth it rarely were, and at the end of the day, you needed to know you’d said your piece.

“I always wanted to be just like you.  You were my hero,” you said breaking the silence. “You were forced through so much, and you still came out on the other side a strong woman with even stronger bonds with those you loved.  I guess I always wished I could be like that or have that bond.”

Now it was Kori’s turn to be taken by surprise.  She watched as you quietly made your way back into the building.  She’d spent so long looking at you in a single light that the idea that you weren’t some spoiled and coddled child was foreign to her.  In the time she’d spent resenting you, you’d learned how to take that animosity and turn it into love for others in any hope to fill that void.

Back in the apartment Kori set down her box before grabbing you by the elbow and dragging you out to the fire escape.  

“I was wrong,” she stated. “ We have more than one thing in common.  You have faced your own adversity, and it is time that I stop comparing it to that of my own because it has made you into the person standing before me.  The person who shows my friend love and accepts it in return, without fear of being hurt; something I’ve struggled with myself.  You became a strong woman because that is who you set out to be, and that says a lot.  I apologize for the harsh judgments I passed, and would like to work to make things right between us.”

As the afternoon drew on, your new home was beginning to look just like that, a home.  Before you knew it, you and Roy were alone again.

“You planned that, didn’t you?” you asked as Roy drew you into his arms on the couch.

Roy kissed your head as you rested against his chest. “Sometimes it takes an outsider to see what both sides need, especially when they’re both more alike an either would care to admit.”

You smiled into his chest as you let the exhaustion from moving and emotional confessions wash over you.  Moving in together was a big step, but for the first time in a long time, you felt like you were home and a part of a family.  That was a feeling you weren’t going to let go of any time soon.
