It's likely he was dropped off at or near the castle at a young age, perhaps the villagers hoped he wouldn't be their problem any longer and simply didn't care what happened to him, or maybe it was a peace offering to maybe keep the vampires at bay for a while. Krolock? He was delighted. He hadn't experienced what it was like to raise a child since Herbert was young, and that was centuries ago. So, much to his son's protests, he took in the bundle of rags left in his courtyard, There were difficulties, of course, but Krolock raised him as best as an angsty vampire man could. Koukol'd run through the halls giggling, but he'd always be told off for waking up the court during the day to ask if they wanted to play. Eventually, even Herbert became very fond of him, and saw him almost as a little brother, which he tried to convince himself was an act for his father's sake, but their trips out playing in the forest - and letting him win their snowball fights- proved otherwise. He knows that Krolock and his retinue can't go out during the day, so he's often sent out to buy groceries. He doesn't understand why the villagers are afraid of him, but that's because if anything were to happen to him they would all be visited by a very, very angry Graf. When he goes out shopping or accosting Chagal for more candles, Herbert slips him some money on the sly to buy some sweets. Just don't tell Vati! All i'm saying is, he deserves to be a part of the big happy bat family!
