Living in an entire den of men and wolves, it was difficult to get time to oneself. This was something that Natalie had to get used to. Well. One of the many things she’d had to get used to. She’d always been an only child - independent, on her own. It had never been difficult to find time for her needs, alone time…so she had never worried about it. Never thought it was necessary. Now?
It was like searching for El Dorado, or Atlantis. A mythical place that some rumoured to exist, but it was so damn hard to find…it was probably false.
She found her excuse one day after a long run - one of the few things she was able to do on her own. Waking up at the crack of dawn and taking off before anyone could protest just about guaranteed her solitude. She’d gone pretty far - farther than usual, run longer than usual, enjoying the quiet and the peace. She hadn’t really recognized the path to the hot spring until she came upon it, steam misting the air around her. Hot, sweaty, and longing to relax, it didn’t take the young mage long to decide that a good soak was exactly what she needed.
She didn’t worry about being seen as she stripped off her outfit, hanging it over the branch of a nearby tree. Her hair was tied into a quick braid and looped around her head, and slowly, she lowered herself into the water.
Bliss.
She closed her eyes and leaned her head back, sinking down until the water covered her mouth. She was not so absorbed in her relaxation, though, to not notice the approaching footsteps. She froze and looked around her, wondering if it was a member of the tribe, or something more nefarious. She got her answer when long tanned legs stopped beside where she’d abandoned her clothes, blue eyes scanning the area as the man sniffed the air. It couldn’t have been easy to find her scent through all of the steam…
She decided to make things easy for him, smirking and moving toward him, letting the water splash audibly against her skin. Hearing her, Kouga looked down, and looked…almost relieved. She expected him to lecture her - to rant and to rave and to yell. She did not expect for him to watch her with a silent smile, strip off his armour, and slip into the water with her.
”There you are.” He growled, pulling her closer as soon as she was within reach, running his hands over the smooth curves of her hips, crushing her body against his possessively. Apparently, he didn’t appreciate being apart from her. She almost chuckled.“I’ve been looking for you all morning.”
“I went for a run…” She lifted her hands out of the water, settling them on his chest and nuzzling at his throat. “You were asleep. I didn’t want to disturb you.”“You should have…” He was backing them up, she realized - right up to a smooth boulder, it’s surface heated by the water. “I would have gone with you.”
“I kind of wanted to be alone…” She saw no reason to hide it from him, shrugging.
“So did I.”
✤
“Kouga, honey, we’ve been over this before.” Natalie smiled teasingly, letting her fingers tap at his hips, toying with the furs that clung to his muscular figure. “You wouldn’t be able to handle me.” She echoed her earlier words, smirking. “Never mind dominate me.”There was a challenge in her voice, though - daring him to try, to see what he would do. Dark eyes locked with his and egged him on, her body leaning closer, thumbs slipping between his chest piece and his furs, tracing sensual circles against his hips.
“Remember?"
Gone

The house seemed emptier, now. Too big. Too quiet.
Natalie sat at the end of her bed, her hands clasped over her knees, staring hard at the floor and refusing to think of what had just happened. Of Zak and Iona's magic surrounding Kouga, of him disappearing, sent back to his time. She should have been happy for him, and goddess, she tried. He was home. He was where he was needed.
But he wasn't with her.
Her fingers tightened and the lump in her throat grew, threatening to choke her. The thought of not breathing was almost tempting, but she knew she was being silly. Zak needed her. That's why she'd stayed behind. That's why she couldn't go – if she threw that all away in a sulky fit, then everything she had just done would have been for nothing. Instead, she took in a shuddering breath, a hiccup shaking her shoulders. She didn't bother to stop them. What did it matter? There was no one to hear her, to see her. She was alone. Kouga was gone, and she was alone.
The knock that cut through the oppressive silence of her room quickly changed that. Jerking her head up, Natalie stared at the closed hatch over her staircase. She didn't want to speak, for fear that her voice betray her, but...what was the point of keeping them out?
“...It's open.” She wasn't sure how they heard her, but somehow they did, opening the trap door and peeking inside. She was surprised to see that it was Iona, and not Zak, and it showed on her face.
“Och, Lass...” Natalie turned away from the sympathy in Iona's voice, unable to meet the other red-heads eyes as she made her way into the room, stopping just short of Natalie's bed. “...Why dinnae you tell me wha' I was takin' away...?”
That was a question that Natalie didn't want to answer. She looked up at Iona none the less, a hollow laugh escaping her. “I...thought it would be e-easier, if I...didn't say it...”
It wasn't. That had been a mistake – a great one. Besides that...she'd been afraid that Iona would refuse.
She hadn't told her what she was taking away, because it had been hard enough just to ask her to take those memories from Kouga.
“...It was the right thing to do.” She didn't know who she was trying to convince as she spoke, lacing her fingers together, digging her nails into the backs of her hands. “He...” Her voice cracked, and she felt the bed shift under Iona's weight as the Scottish woman sat down beside her. She forced herself to continue, glad that no comforting touches were offered. She didn't want to be touched. She barely wanted to talk about it. “...He needs a m...a wife, to fix his tribe.” How she managed to steady her voice, she did not know. “It can't be me. I n-need to stay here, and...if he remembered what we did...He only does it once, and I can't make him...”
Gone was the steadiness in her voice, hiccups breaking through her words. “I didn't want him to b-be...alone...”
No matter how tightly she held her hands together, they still shook. Her lips still quivered, her nose stung, and her vision blurred. She was an idiot. She should never have given in to his temptations. She should have kept her distance. Not having him at all...It would have been better than having him taken away. She stood by her decision, though.
This felt horrible. She didn't want Kouga, of all people, to feel any of it.
“...I have somethin' f'er ya.” Iona said softly, her hand light on Nat's shoulder. Slowly, the young mage looked up, her eyes catching on a glittering blue crystal in Iona's palm. “I...couldnae destroy them.”
She didn't have to tell Natalie what they were. She knew – the memories that she'd taken from Kouga. As if it would sting to touch them, Natalie reached tentatively out, taking the gem. It hung on a fine silver chain which pooled in Natalie's palm as Iona handed it over. As she let it go, the older witch stood.
“I'm here, if ye need an ear.” She said no more as she disappeared down the stairs. Natalie didn't need to ask her to leave – Iona had always understood her, almost too well.
She waited until she heard the click of the door to look down at the crystal. Silvery streams spun with in it, warm and sparkling. Biting down onto her trembling bottom lip, Natalie ran one slender finger down the length of the long crystal, one small spark of golden magic trailing after it. Instantly, an undeniable warmth spread through her. The room faded, and she heard his voice. Not imagining it, as she had been since his lean form had disappeared through the portal – she heard it.
“Be my mate.”
Beneath his arms, beneath his body against the wall, he could feel Natalie trembling, struggling to answer him. Each time her breath hitched in her throat, his heart slammed hard against his ribcage, threatening to burst through. He was nervous. He was...scared. He didn't want her to say no.
Blue eyes pleaded down at the shocked brown orbs that stared up at him, drinking in the soft curves of her cheeks, the way her eyelashes kissed gently against flushed flesh as she blinked, beautiful in her confusion. She was stunning. She was brilliant. Gods damn it all – he wanted her to be his.
For a moment, he feared she wouldn't answer at all. Or worse – that her answer would be no. She had resisted for so long...and she was so stubborn... But then her lips were on his, and fuck, it felt so right. He arched eagerly into the kiss, pulling her away from the wall, against him. He didn't need her to speak. He knew her answer.
Still, though, she tried, pulling away from him to answer. Loathe to relinquish the prize of her lips, Kouga followed them, cutting her off. She squirmed and wiggled, though, until her mouth was free. What she said made him feel like he was soaring.
“I love you too. I will. I-”
Again, he interrupted her, trapping those words on her lips with a grin and a rumbling growl. His, he thought as he lifted her, slamming them both against the wall. She was his. He only needed one more thing to make it official.
Despite his lust, no matter how he wanted her, Kouga forced himself to be gentle as his hands explored her form. She was soft, and slender, and felt impossibly fragile beneath his fingers. He didn't want to hurt her...far from it. He wanted her to scream his name louder than she'd ever screamed that hooligan's. He wanted to please her, to mark her as his. There were so many things that he wanted to try...
The memory gripped Natalie tightly, drawing her in and refusing to let her go. His first time, their first time – it spun through her mind, lit her body on fire...and reminded her of everything she would never have again.
She would never see his brilliant blue eyes staring down at her adoringly, never hear his voice whisper in her ear. She would never feel his broad shoulders beneath her fingers, his chest pressed against hers. No arguments, even – she would have accepted that, at the very least. To hear him snarl, or laugh, or...anything. Something. It was tempting to fall into his memories. To see him and feel him again...but it wasn't real. She knew that. Nothing felt right, nothing felt...solid...
The first sob that escaped was quiet, almost sneaking as it came forth. It slipped into a whimper as she curled toward her knees, pressing her hands against her eyes and pushing the heels of her palms until she saw stars. From there... Heavy, choking sobs that made it hard to breathe, salty tears running down her face until she could taste them. Her nose stuffed, beginning to run, and she didn't even care. She pressed her face against her knees and let everything out, his name shaking from her lips as a mournful keening overtook the whimpers and the sobs. She curled herself further into a ball, trying to breathe properly, and failing.
She wanted Iona. She wanted Zak. She wanted someone to wrap their arms around her and pull her close, but it wouldn't be the same.
It wouldn't be him. It never would be again.
