Spoilers for the Krampus comic for those who haven't read it but
I think the comic solidifies the fact that Krampus did NOT send the family to some kind of purgatory, he really did give them a second chance at being a good family to eachother. He gave max the bell as the warning to not screw up again.
I know thats obvious but when I first saw the movie I thought they were just put in a groundhog day type Christmas hell but the comic pretty much showed all krampus wants to do is help people see the Christmas spirit, even tho he does it in the most horrifying and overkill ways imaginable.
It leaves me some comfort atleast lol.
Also the comic showed that the family wasn't the only ones getting punished on Christmas, other people were too. That's prolly one of the reasons krampus wasn't too preoccupied with them since he was going to other houses.
