Marina Ovsyannikova has been charged with spreading false information about the Russian army after she interrupted a live broadcast to denounce the military action in Ukraine.

Brave journalist, Maria Ovsyannikova, faces continued persecution from the Russian authorities for condemning the war in Ukraine. She has exposed Russian atrocities committed by soldiers there and refuses to stop doing so, even with continual persecution. Ovsyannikova was born in Ukraine and lives in Russia.

Russian politician Vladimir Milov, who also exposed that at least one of these polls citing majority Russian support for the war came from an unknown methodology. Anyone who has watched how Putin systematically rigs elections to claim fabricated victories is automatically suspicious of claims that Putin has massive support in Russia. 

Is it a coincidence that this support for the war has surfaced after Putin shut down independent media, blocked Twitter, blocked FaceBook, sent the police to check the phones of Russian civilians, had people against the war fired from their jobs, had people leaving the country detained and interrogated, and blackmailed the population with 15 years in prison if they condemned his war? I don’t think so. 

And how did we get from Western media reporting how public opinion in Russia was against further war in Ukraine back in February to majority support within weeks, despite major protests around the country that caused Putin to shut down independent media and threaten Russians with 15 years in prison? 

There’s no doubt that there are many Russians who have swallowed the lies of their government and support these crimes against humanity. But we’re not hearing from those who have fought this illegal war, because they aren’t given equal space. Russians who have fought Putin’s regime for over two decades and warned the West to sanction him and his oligarchs years ago. Many of those people face legal threats and even threats to their life, as we have already seen. 

So we’re getting a one-sided image of Russia that is dominated by Putin and his garbage, war crimes apologist propaganda TV stations who control the narrative. Yet Putin is a man who constantly rigs elections because he cannot find enough Russians to vote for him. (Vladimir Milov has been banned from participating in Russian elections, as have many of his colleagues.)

Last year, his party hit lows of 21%, yet Putin claimed he had won ‘majorities’ in the September parliamentary elections. The year before that, he claimed that over 70% of Russians supported his latest abuse of the Russian Constitution, when in fact around 22 million votes were falsified, and you can see videos of people stuffing ballots. 

So don’t rush to believe any news that claims Russians as a whole are giving Putin support. 

We’re not getting the full story.

Arguably all information is to some degree propaganda because neutral framing is largely not a thing

HOWEVER not all propaganda is the same: some propaganda is more distorted than other kinds. This is not an "all information is propaganda so nothing is" kind of post

In this same vein: all governments put out propaganda but some propaganda contains more falsehood than other propaganda

The conclusion: Understanding reality is a difficult and often unrewarding process of sifting through conflicting propagandas and sources you trust more than others to try and determine what the truth is

The problem: Because liberalism as an ideology pretends to be post-ideology/doesn't examine its own principles, liberal propaganda is framed as "truth" and propaganda from other ideologies as "lies"

This is dangerous because that means that on many posts trying to raise awareness about Kremlin Propaganda, OP often portrays propaganda from opposing sources as objective truth and thus undercuts and discredits their own apparent expertise about propaganda

And it ends up looking (incorrectly) like pure whataboutism to point out "you're correctly labeling Kremlin Propaganda as Kremlin Propaganda, but not saying anything about US Propaganda" when it's actually saying "you're treating Russian-flavored propaganda as propaganda and American-flavored propaganda as objective truth so I don't trust your ability to judge what's true"

And that's why it's meaningful to acknowledge your awareness of US/NATO propaganda when you debunk Kremlin propaganda

Almost 4,000 people have reblogged the original post in this screenshot. I’m begging you guys to think critically before you hit reblog. Now more than ever, we should all be checking the sources of what we share on social media.

First of all, this is a tweet from Chinese state-affiliated media, so that's the first red flag. Which then also explains why it conveniently leaves out the Chinese Government’s genocide against the Uighurs. If you don’t notice who tweeted this, it looks like a valid point - why hasn’t Western media called out US bombings in the Middle-east? - but it’s actually an attempt to deflect attention away from Russia (China’s strategic partner) and to completely gloss over the Chinese Government’s violence against its own Muslim population. 

For the record, I absolutely think that Western media should have been far more critical of US bombings in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, and literally every other country that the US has bombed. But this tweet is completely disingenuous.

Second of all, the person who posted this (redchrominance) doesn't think the Uighur genocide is even happening, and she also doesn't think the Holodomor famine in Ukraine happened, because she’s a Stalin apologist. She has also spread the conspiracy theory (which has been embraced by Russia, QAnon and the far right) that Ukraine is hosting US-made bioweapons.

Third, the claim that CNN has called the war “genocide” is extremely misleading. I looked for a source to back up that claim, and the only things I could find were, 1) a CNN article saying that a Ukraine-born member of US Congress called the Russian' invasion "genocide,” and 2) CNN articles covering Zelenskyy’s comments that the invasion amounts to “genocide.” So it wasn't CNN calling the war genocide, it was CNN reporting on what politicians had said. If anybody does find a source for CNN itself calling the war genocide, let me know.

(And this should go without saying, but people who reply to this post claiming that the Uighur genocide isn’t happening, or that the Holodomor didn’t happen, will be blocked.)
