De and Carolyn attended the Wenatchee Apple Blossom Parade. This is where they first met Kris Smith.

De liked to tell the story of he and Carolyn meeting Kris. Here is at the 90 09 01 Seattle Convention. Transcript below.
De: Do it again! What a wonderful looking group of people. You're as beautiful as this state. (applause) It's true, I tell you. It's been a long time since I've been here. This is a very, very beautiful state and beautiful city. I took a walk yesterday downtown and they had to throw a rope to me to get me up a couple of hills. I tell you, I bet you people have got legs like Arnold Schwarzenegger. I have never seen so many hills in my life. And you can't beam up them or beam down them. No, I was here a long time ago, back in 1968, for the third year of our series. I came up here, I think it was ’68, ’67; I was to attend, we always joke about it, the Queen of the Apple Festival in Wenatchee. In fact, I met a little girl up here who was running alongside the car with a sign, We love De, or something like that.
And so when I got back to Hollywood I received a letter from her. It was really not a letter, it was an article about her going to Wenatchee in order to see me and in order to say hello. And so in reading it, I was so impressed with it that I sent it to a movie magazine and they published it. And I think she may be in the audience. Is Kris Smith here? Where? She's still following me around. (laughter) She was in Los Angeles, what was it, about four weeks ago you were there? Everywhere I go, I can't shake this girl. She's got something on me, so that's the reason I have to introduce her. She's a lovely gal and she's doing well and now she's decided to go with all the animals down in Los Angeles and do something to further that writing career and I’m sure she will. Thank you, Kris.
