September arrives like it’s got something to prove.

Four kids, four wildly different plotlines,

And one mum who’s forgotten what silence sounds like.

One kid walking into their last year of secondary school as the other walks into their first year.

Eva-Beatrix is fifteen,

Starting her last year of secondary school,

Which means GCSEs, revision plans,

And a lot of dramatic arguing, she’s got alot of anime items , bee-embroidered Converse... And the emotional range of a Shakespeare monologue.

Oscar’s eleven, starting secondary.

Becoming his own person with his own responsibilities,

Except when it comes to locating his own shoes.

Random stats? Encyclopedic.

Homework folder? Missing in action.

Winnie’s seven, Year 3 royalty.

With her k-pop Demon Hunters on, stitch teddy,

And a firm belief that bedtime is a personal insult.

She narrates her life like a podcast,

Mostly during my attempts to eat dinner.

And Dottie - baby in the cutest outfits,

Currently in my arms,

She’s the only one not packing a lunchbox,

Just vibes and occasional chaos and offering very long nights.

I’m on maternity leave,

Which is code for “never sitting down.”

Solo mum, snack supplier, cleaner, emotional support human... And part-time referee.

The house is loud,

The calendar’s full,

And if one more person asks what’s for tea,

I’m moving into the outhouse

And starting a new life as a mushroom.
