Initial thoughts on True Beauty:
After watching the first two episodes, I wasn’t really that into the drama and was resolved to watch it only for Cha Eun Woo. But after watching this week’s episodes, I have actually really come to like the drama!
It’s really humorous and I love the interactions between the characters. I especially like how Lee Soo Ho knows the truth about Im Ju Kyung in the beginning, rather than it being a huge secret only revealed near the midway point. Personally, I think that keeps the story from not dragging and will help it to focus more on the development of the characters and their relationships.
There are some issues with the drama... Specifically about Im Ju Kyung being “ugly”, which I have seen mentioned by other people. In this aspect, I can’t help but compare the drama to My ID is Gangnam Beauty because they had a similar theme, but they did it 100% better by not showing Kang Mi Rae when she was “ugly”. This helps to not define what is ugly, especially because Ju Kyung’s “ugliness” is honestly something that is natural and every teenager at some point faces. Let’s not even talk about Ju Kyung’s mother... Woman, the things you say and the way you react to good looking people, and you’re still wondering why your daughter is spending so much time and money to look pretty?
Further, I didn’t like how Ju Kyung’s changing her personality to fit what she thinks a “pretty girl’s” should be. Why did she have to lie/hide the fact that she likes horror comics and rock music? Are you saying only outcasts are into those things? That just really irked me.
Props to Kang Tae Oh! He truly portrays this delusional Grand Prince and his feelings and motivations in such a convincing way! But at the same time we all know he can be or at least play such a major dork in other dramas. His duality is truly something else!
