Hello! I am a hearing writer trying to include (made-up) signed languages in my fantasy story project. My questions can be about any signed language, not just ASL: Can you suggest resources for me to learn about how signed poetry is different from signed conversation? I don't know much ASL and watching youtube videos isn't the same as comprehension, and I assume sign poetry is at least as hard to translate into English as from any other language. (1/2)
(2/2) Are there any written sign languages developed organically? I found SignWriting but that appears to have been deliberately invented in the last century and I can't tell from the internet whether that's used much by Deaf communities. Again this can be about any signed language, not just about written ASL. I am trying to figure out if it would be reasonable for my fantasy story to have a widely used written signed language and what it might look like. Thanks!
Hello,
I recommend reading some published work about the topic of poetry in sign language! Yes, signed poetry is difficult to translate, especially due to its usage of 3D space.
Some links: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/233512506_Sign_language_poetry_and_Deaf_identity
https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/001002777690010X
This article has lot of links as well - https://jacket2.org/commentary/american-sign-language-medium-poetry
(as a note, most articles talk about ASL, because its the most researched sign language and to my knowledge, also the most commonly used for poetry.)
As for written version of sign languages, no, there are none. There are ways to transcribe or write down sign languages, but they are not used by ordinary deaf people - usually its for research and linguistic purposes, international conferences, etc. There were some movements for the spread of it among Deaf population, like SignWriting, but it didn’t really took off. (at least, I haven’t met a single Deaf person who would use it... Perhaps in some parts of USA its used but I haven’t heard about it)
The reason again is the 3D issue - its very difficult to write down something which exists in 3D space in 2D written medium. To this day, the most accurate way of preserving sign language is video.
However, the lack of written form isn’t really uncommon when it comes to languages. Its actually more common for a language to NOT have a written form than to have it and that includes spoken languages.
Signed languages also don’t really use written form because deaf people are used to writing in the spoken language of the country they live in. Deaf people are always a minority and to function in hearing society, you have to learn to write.
I suppose a written version of sign language could exist in a fantasy world with a country of only Deaf people, especially if its some sort of magic world and moving 3D runes or some such can be used.

Autumn asks!! Such an enjoyable set of options. 8, 9, and 15?
Thank you!
8. Halloween V.S. Thanksgiving - Halloween 1000%
9. Bake Pie V.S. Bake Cookies - Cookies! Except for pumpkin I’m weirdly not much of a pie fan.
15. Cinnamon V.S. Nutmeg - Cinnamon. Nutmeg is delicious but, fun fact, is toxic in large quantities.
Replies! I just wanted to say thankyou for your lovely words @old-long-john, @kulapti, @gaskells ❤︎ Your enthusiasm buoys me up! :) old-long-john said: That tattoo idea was so completely inspired! And you already know I love your writing. GOOD SHIT. ❤︎ Ahhhh! :D I am beaming. You describing my work as GOOD SHIT is the highest freaking praise. kulapti said: Gasp, more Prowl of Wampuses scenes, aw yeeees *huge grin* I have another new Prowl of Wampuses fic 90% written too. I just need to finish it! gaskells said: god i love that damned tattoo *grin* I love that damned tattoo too and I cannot stop writing about it!
I love the texture of the entire Russian aristocracy AU, omg, it makes me think of vintage glamour photography and gold-leafing and expressive gothic silences. Reading each one feels like examining the next in a row of unset smoky moonstones in a tiny black velvet box. *clings*
Aaaaaaaaaahhhhh!!!! I really like this and thank you so muuuuuchh!!!
I am sorry that I have not posted more, but it seems like I rode out the wave of creativity to the sharp pointy rocks at the end.
Okay one of my favorite little headcanons is that Gellert used to be taller than Albus. He was the tall one when they met, maybe not by much, but he made a point of teasing Albus about it, in the way one does about details that aren't very important. And then after everything goes down, they haven't seen each other in person for years, and at some point when they finally do see each other they realize, Oh. Now Albus is the Taller One.
I can accept this as an explanation for why movieverse Gellert is taller than Albus, and also I adore the thought of Gellert’s reaction at suddenly having to look up at Albus (”oh no he’s even hotter”).
Autumn asks~ Harvest, bonfire, moonlit?
Ah, thankyou! :D (Sorry I’ve been so slow to reply - tumblr kept crashing on me so I’m rewriting them…)Harvest - what fictionalcharacter do you most identify with? Why? I’ve had a long think about this! I probably relate most toRemus Lupin, with whom I share the traits of being quiet, anxious, academicallyclever, and valuing kindness & friendship above all things. I also teach(and wear shabby jackets with elbow patches whilst doing so!) Like Lupin, I livewith a long-term medical condition which affects my day-to-day life. Added tothis, he’s one of the queerest characters in HP.JK Rowling describes Lupin’s main flaw as “a desperate desire to belong and tobe liked” which “meant that he was neither as brave nor as honest as he oughtto have been.” TOO REAL, and TOO RELATABLE. D:Turns out I could write a small essay about how much I identify with RemusLupin. Suffice to say, I too have fantasies of running away from my problems tohide in a “semi-derelict cottage in Yorkshire,” and I’m also in love withSirius Black. Bonfire - Describe your dream house.I’m rather keen on the idea of living in a windmill like Jonathan Creek (the title character of a British mystery series from the 1990s) or in a Victorian/Edwardian townhouse with big sash windows and steps up to the front door. Wherever I live, I’d like there to be a library’s worth of books, a whistling kettle, and antique furniture.Moonlit - are you a neat or messy person? Is your room / house orderly?‘Ordered clutter’ is probably the best way to describe it - everything in my room/flat has its place (neat) but I like having big piles of books and papers around the place, postcards stuck haphazardly on the walls etc (mess!!!) It just feels more homely that way. I try to draw the line at having a floordrobe.
Thank you for blessing us with grindeldore memes, they are ridiculous and I love them (both the memes and the wizards)
Thank you, lol
