It’s strange, seeing Asimov like this; peaceful. Almost unthinkingly, he bends to press a gentle kiss to their forehead—and freezes, because he’d told himself not to get close, hadn’t he? Spending time together on business was one thing. Spending the night was another, but one that could be passed off as convenience, never mind the conversation or the quiet, comforting warmth of Asimov curled up against his chest. But this...
Asimov’s head turns unconsciously, and he’s still frozen, and their eyes flutter open, and he’s standing there, one hand on the edge of the bed, bent over them like a knight come to wake a sleeping beauty.
“Hey,” they mumble. “You’re close.”
“Ah,” he manages. “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have—” He means to pull away, but Asimov’s hand catches his collar, tugging him gently back.
“Now can I kiss you?”
It’d be easy, says a little voice in his head, to say no.
It’d be easy, says the same voice, to say yes.
“Okay,” he says.
Asimov tilts their head up and kisses him—gently, groggily—and he realizes that this was a mistake, because now that it’s happened he sees no reason why it shouldn’t keep happening. (Because it’s dangerous; because Ogai will inevitably find a way to wring something out of it; because the people around him get hurt, and the people close to him get hurt more, and this is about as close as someone could possibly get without shoving their hand into his chest. Even though in some ways, it feels a little like that. A hand around his heart: gentle, but unlikely to let go any time soon.)
