How on earth did Mitsutada and Ookurikara get so close when the later always says that he doesnt intend to make friends with anyone?

Since coming to the citadel I’ve been able to get to know the Dategumi fairly well. Mitsutada is a very patient, persistent individual with a great deal of natural charm, and Ookurikara isn’t as much of a loner as he likes to claim.

That said, when Ookurikara came home he was the only one of the Dategumi swords in the citadel and he didn’t speak to anyone. He gave taichou a great deal of trouble by starting small fights with other toudan and by slacking off at chores. Most of my brothers avoided him but Namazuo took it upon himself to *make* Ookurikara into a team player. My brother is stubborn and enthusiastic and I don’t think he liked seeing someone so alone. If I had a help token for every time Namazuo threw himself into a double attack with an increasingly irritated Ookurikara, taichou would never have to wait for a new sword to smith ever again.

Namazuo’s insistence did help to break down Ookurikara’s walls somewhat. By the time Mitsutada arrived he had at least stopped snapping at everyone who came close, but he still wasn’t at all interested in socializing with us. He even tried to avoid Mitsutada at first but that effort was…short lived. Mitsutada was overjoyed at seeing his companion again. On the day of his arrival he asked taichou if he could share sleeping space with Ookurikara and she agreed immediately (he had proven…disagreeable…to previous roommates), then Mitsutada spent the next few days following Ookurikara around the citadel nonstop.

I’ve mentioned that Mitsutada is a charmer. He’s also quite affectionate and open with his emotions and can read Ookurikara’s unspoken wants and needs more clearly than anyone else, even taichou. What Ookurikara needs most is affection and patience and Mitsutada has both to give in spades.

His gentle persistence paid off. By the time Tsurumaru came to the citadel it was pretty clear that his friends had finally paired off after a couple centuries of dancing around one another. Tsurumaru’s response was a nonchalant “Oh, this is no surprise at all,” then he ditched the subject and wandered off to feed kitchen scraps to Shishiou’s nue.
