just here to remind you!!! how in both houses and hopes, in cf and sb, sylvain's death quotes are about dimitri and only dimitri. if dimitri goes down first, sylvain is the person who reacts to it.
also!!! we get the sheer difference in dimitri's behavior/mental state between the two routes of each game! in cf (houses in general, really), he's much more ready to die. he speaks less about wanting to die, but he puts it into his actions significantly more.
when sylvain dies in cf, he's much more calm, but he anticipates seeing him again on the other side (i.e. he seems to either expect to die there or just expects in general to die a relatively early death. even if he didn't and he's just generally saying this, it still stands that he has the expectation of meeting sylvain on the other side whenever it happens, which is not something he says to anyone else, and i thiiink in any other route). something interesting between them is that they both are uh, basically expecting to go to hell and are both also pretty suicidal without each other, so it's not odd of dimitri to say this, because someone who believes they'll go to hell but the other person would go to heaven probably wouldn't normally say something like this.
then we have sb, where sylvain rushes out in a fit of revenge driven rage and dies because of it (even despite felix telling him to come back alive). sylvain kind of takes on azure moon dimitri's role in sb, being the one who dies because he's so focused on avenging the dead that he can't focus on protecting the living.
when he dies, he regains himself long enough to ask dimitri for forgiveness - not felix, who told him to come back alive (or else!!!) - but dimitri. he wishes the best for dimitri who is alive, not thinking about ingrid who was long gone. he doesn't think about his father. he doesn't think about his still living brother who is fighting at the western front to stop the empire. he could have thought about how he would be with ingrid again (does matthias die in this route? i forget... but if he does, like, he also doesn't think about how he could be with his father again soon. i know rodrigue died in sb which is why i'm like hm wait did matthias also die), but as he dies his thoughts are that he wishes the best for dimitri/that he doesn't die in this battle too.
dimitri's mental state in hopes is not quite the same as it is in houses. he's suicidal, but it's mostly in his words and far less in his actions (as it's in this same battle iirc that he retreats because he knows the kingdom will fall if he, the king, falls). his mindset is that no matter what, he has to survive. in houses, he dies in all routes except his own because he doesn't have this mindset. in hopes, he can't die in any route, as he prioritizes his survival for the sake of the kingdom.
in this case, he doesn't mention seeing sylvain on the other side, but instead laments his death and becomes distressed by it. in my dimivainest heart of hearts, i am here to remind you that dimitri says "what am i supposed to do now"... even though dedue and felix are both still alive. yes, most of their friends and family have been slain by the empire at this point... but dimitri still has two of his closest friends and allies with him.
when he loses sylvain though, he's actually sounding like he's lost all hope. this isn't the case when ingrid died - when he lost ingrid, he lamented her death and how she couldn't live the life she deserved. he felt bad for her and was in pain about losing her, but it was a driving force to keep fighting. when he loses sylvain (sylvain, his beloved), he loses hope and the will to keep fighting. he retreats from the battle after being defeated, and he no longer engages in battle for the remainder of the route. he doesn't bother trying to help the church, which is something he does do in the other two routes... where sylvain is still alive.
tl;dr the moment sylvain goes kaput, dimitri basically gives up. the moment dimitri goes kaput, sylvain basically gives up (he dies fighting alongside him in cf, and in vw he "jokes" about fighting like he wants to die... which comes after the very first exploration dialogue you get from him in vw, where he says he hopes he doesn't regret his choice by fighting with the alliance (because of thinking the kingdom is already too in ruins to save). the moment one of them goes down, the other like, lbh lowkey treats it like it's the end of the world).
i know most people say dimitri's best friend is felix or dedue but i will forever stand by my choice that it is sylvain.
