A Tuba to Cuba: Preservation Hall Jazz Band at the Town Hall on Thursday
Back in 2015, the world-renowned Preservation Hall Jazz Band took a field trip to Cuba to trace the Afro-Caribbean roots of New Orleans jazz. The journey was filmed and released this past winter as the terrific documentary A Tuba to Cuba, a joyful illustration of the power of music and how those who don’t speak the same language can still communicate through musical instruments. The film’s accompanying soundtrack (stream it here) arrived on Sub Pop over the summer. “A Tuba to Cuba showcases the band’s abundantly cross-pollinated brand of traditional New Orleans jazz. While the titular tuba, played here by bandleader Ben Jaffe, takes a central role on the album, so do many of the Cuban musical traditions the Preservation Hall encountered on their journey,” says AllMusic. “More than just a souvenir of an affectionately captured journey, A Tuba to Cuba is a heartfelt celebration of the richly shared musical heritage that connects New Orleans and Cuba.” First the trip, then the film followed by the album and now the tour: If you can help it, don’t miss Preservation Hall Jazz Band on Thursday night at the Town Hall. Cuban singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Yusa opens the show.
