I don’t expect this post will get much activity as most of my account is about fanart and random blurbs, but as we deal with so much pessimism and so many reasons to feel defeated in the face of automation and apathy… I just want to feel something when looking at a handmade creation. I just want others to know I can see the world as something soothing and textured. I hope others do. I hope people don’t look at my art and comment about how I could sell it for money. I hope people can look at it, see the brushstrokes, and see my hand in it. I hope others can see they can do something with their own hands as well, and that we can see something beautiful in the world around us

I’m kind of afraid of writing for Crosshair at this point...

Okay this turned into a long ramble but I swear there's a point in there somewhere, as well as an opinion on writing for him. My full thoughts are under the cut. Please keep in mind that this is just my opinion though, other people might think differently and at the end of the day, its not up to me to give people permission to write what they feel like writing lol. All I can really say is try to think critically about the way people are being portrayed and the messages you are putting out there.

Look, I'll be honest. I've always thought he was a dick and I don't understand his appeal to people when almost every other clone there is seems to be much nicer, better looking, have better morals, have better personalities, are more loyal and don't look and act like they'd call me or my friends a slur lol.

That being said, I do know a lot of people liked him and like to write for him. I generally don't care and when I see stuff about him on my dash I just scroll past 🤷‍♀️  And I know a lot of his fans were shocked and upset with the reveal that his chip was out. All that is fine! I actually personally think that was a really interesting reveal, bc the whole time despite not liking him, I did feel awful that his control was taken from him and I was rooting for him to get his chip removed. I think the angst potential there would have been crazy if the writers ever decided to actually properly explore the trauma that would cause. So when it was revealed it was removed a long time ago, I thought that was interesting and that would make him a really interesting villain since we haven't really seen any clones willingly work with the empire without the chips.

All that is to say, I think he has the potential to be an interesting and compelling villain, and I don't think that liking him and thinking he's an interesting character before, nor after his reveal is necessarily a problem. The problem is everyone defending him after the reveal and trying to say that he's justified in joining the empire just because he was bullied by regs, or because his brothers didn't immediately try to rescue him (when they were trying to stay alive while also looking after a small child who had bounty hunters after her). Also, he is a highly skilled fighter who was surrounded by imperials, had a highly trained squad working with him, AND while its obviously horrible that the chip was controlling him, he wasn't actually in immediate danger so there wasn't a life or death reason for them to try and save him right away. So people trying to justify that he was right to join the empire just because he wasn't rescued are realllly reaching.

It's frustrating and upsetting when people take characters who are clearly villains and try to explain away or justify their horrible actions and beliefs. You can like and think that someone evil is an interesting and compelling character without trying to say they're good. And you can write stories and even reader insterts about those characters without justifying or excusing their behaviour. The key is in acknowledging that the character is bad and represents bad things, and then not saying the opposite lol. Like, as long as you're not making him out to be the victim in a canon compliant fic (aka saying he's anything but wrong to join the empire) then you're probably fine.
