Here the Great Lis's Cool Thoughts
I HATE HATE HATE the idea of "auteurs" in general but especially in Videogames. People act like one single guy can magic up what takes an entire production team to craft and videogames are second only to directors in that lunacy. Not to mention the creators get these enormous massive egos and an entire cult of personality around them. But then you take a look at what they've actually contributed and half the time they're nothing but a big name or they introduced some of the worst elements. Meanwhile the entire team that crafted the masterpiece are barely even acknowledged.
I do greatly enjoy Hideo Kojima's games but he is in no way the sole reason Metal Gear is good. Kojima came up with stupid/wacky ideas and threw them at a wall and had to be told no because they wouldn't make good games. He wanted to have you get worse at shooting if you don't play the game often enough because "your character forgets" The boss fight with "The End" in MGS 3 was planned by him to last 2 weeks. 2 real life weeks of gameplay.
Suda51. SUDA51! This guy literally got put in charge of making the 3rd Twilight Syndrome game and what does he do? Kill off all 3 of the female protagonists. Write in a cool edgy self-insert guy. Make him the new protagonist. Also that new self-insert protagonist is the brother of one of the original female protagonists. And before killing her off he also wrote in that she was in love with his self-insert (who again is her brother). And that's just what he's like whenever he gets on a story that isn't originally his. He has no respect for the work of other creators and will toss out established stories to push what he thinks is cool.
I was gonna keep listing out specific auteurs and my beef with them but I guess I'd probably go mad over that. My point is that no one guy makes a game good and the big names that get success attributed to them are often times some of the worst people in the production. They just leech.
