I feel like this is a bit of a common sense question + "in theory yes, but everyone's different" question but I wanted to double check. If someone who uses AFO braces to walk, (would have drop foot/some weakness without), would it make sense, if while they were doing a stationary activity in their own home for an hour or so, that they would remove them for comfort?

You are absolutely right. It's very much kinda like with any type of brace that whenever your home and you wanna be comfy and can afford to have them off, they come right on off. The only time I personally wore my AFO's at home was when I was getting used to them at the beggining or when I was not walking/getting used to walking again and in my wheelchair.

When getting used to AFO's you wear them in a controlled setting (at home) where you steadily increase the duration in which you wear them but you're able to take breaks. And then once you're used to them you can wear them long term.

For some people though, AFO's function as a mobility aid and the means to be able to walk so it depends on the person but more importantly what condition is causing them to need the AFO's. A lot of people with Cerebral Palsy (CP) often need AFO's and depending on the person will wear them full time or only in certain circumstances, either when just walking or some people even wear them just at night.

Any condition that causes muscle weakness or stiffness, affects muscle function, joint stability, or causes a problem when it comes to walking/walking patterns may need AFO's. Much others such as:

Cerebral Palsy

Stroke

Spinal Muscular Atrophy

Polio

Spinal bifida

Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease

Drop foot in itself is a usually an indication of something else. For me I have drop foot due to my hEDS and the weekness in my ankle joints and surrounding muscles. Some people it will be just due to hyper mobility that does cause weakness or it could be something more, so that's something else to consider.

They also take a considerable amount of dexterity and strength to get on and off though. So if your character has low hand mobility or dexterity they may struggle getting them on and off and may just opt to keep them on. Or alternatively they may have an aid or someone else who can help get them on and off.

sorry it’s just one term, I used the / to censor an ‘i’ so it wouldn’t come up in relevant tags. Basically it’s something people call themselves to indicate they’re ‘pro’ any ships, including portrayals of incestous/paedophillic relationships etc. that are intended to be cute or pornographic. They’re adamant portraying such things does nothing to normalise them, and ignore people who talk about being groomed with that kind of content. (Supposedly anything short of romanticised abuse is ‘spoon feeding readers’ and being overly moral, as if no media has ever shown a fucked up relationship in a nuanced way while ultimately condemning it) They also are notorious for being otherwise creepy, bad with boundaries, and not tagging their triggering content properly.

heres a weirdly specific question: you mentioned that theres a pretty common job in aetheri thats just keeping spells up to date, and that russi was a magical handyman more or less. the things shes described as doing (maintaining the fire wards, making new spells) seem pretty similar to what the magical electricans do. are these the same jobs? (im typing up russi's wiki page which. might give context.)

Pretty much! Although there’s usually a distinction between the job of just maintaining already present spells, and doing that in addition to installing new ones. Mucking with written spells is sort of like mucking with code that other people made. There’s a logical structure you can probably figure out just by studying what’s there and by extension alter it, but that doesn’t mean you would know how to write it from scratch.

I hope this isnt something you get asked a lot, but I notice you put plain text versions of large text on posts. is this due to screenreader quirks or something else i dont know about?

Hey!

While there might be screenreaders who are unable to read some of Tumblr's non-plain text (Tumblr is quite notorious for not working well for screenreaders in general, sometimes even alt text breaks), it's mostly for accessibility for low vision users. There are a lot of guidelines that exist, but the one that is the most relevant here would be that when text is zoomed at the max %, it should be readable without having to go up and down to catch all of it (as in, be able to see the whole letter). So at least on my computer, if I zoom in as much as possible the large text gets partially cut off, while normal size text is always fully in frame. I hope this makes sense.

[Note: while I'm not low vision myself, I had to use that in the past for (ultimately temporary) reasons and I simply found having to "correct" my scrolling whenever there was a font size change like that incredibly annoying. Being able to just use arrows was much easier.]
