Cold War Kids are a fine band. They aren’t the most exciting act on the block but they can hold their own. This instrumental is glorious and Nathan’s vocals are huge, backed by genuine power. The lyrics aren’t great though. I can forgive a bad line here and there but someone soaked this in clichés.

“love will break the chains” “light and darkness will show you the way” “Give you the power to believe again”

Also, There’s this part: “I lift my hands to the sky and I lower the stakes.” How exciting… Whoa, dood. You LOWERED the stakes? Legendary. V good. V powerful. Do you guys remember the person everyone looked up to because he came in and he lowered the stakes? Give me a break.

“Love is Mystical” is a good song that dies in the details. Cold War Kids make music that grows on me slowly but that’s only because I come to grips with their strengths and weakness over time. This song has a fair share of both.
