It’s supposed to be The Nutcracker but... no?
What scene is this? Why are they wearing crowns and matching outfits? Are they dancing in a blizzard? What’s with the trees? Or the red shoes? And why is it so Russian?
Pretty sure there’s nothing like it in the Nutcracker, or any ballet for that matter. Can anyone place this? It seems like they just made up a generic scene and figured good enough. (don’t get me wrong- I adore this scene and the funny dancing and the music, it’s good!)
So I wanted to figure out if this could possibly fit any of Mérante’s ballets. And he does say in the movie ‘auditioning for a role in my new ballet’ so apparently it was specifically the premier of a ballet that he choreographed. That narrows it down. A lot.
I did some digging and he had a new ballet in 1880 (La Korrigane) and then The Twins of Bergamo in 1885. Nothing in ‘83 or ‘84 when the movie was supposed to take place. So... no.
Oh well. Honestly I wasn’t really expecting to find anything, I know I’m trying to place real history in a kids movie (that wasn’t trying all that hard for historical accuracy anyway). It kinda feels like trying to shove a sack of potatoes into an egg carton- it doesn’t really fit. And you know what, it’s fine. Would have been nice.

It actually existed! I mean, I know this is just a crazy coincidence and I doubt anyone making the movie knew about this, but I’ll take it!
There actually was a new ballet choreographed by Mérante (and starring Rosita Mauri) that premiered in, yep, December 1883.
La Farandole
Good luck finding anything about this ballet. It’s lost. All we’ve got are some posters and sheet music. That’s it. What’s the plot? something... about.. dancing??? (Farandole is a French dance that literally translates as ‘the fan’).
Oh, and that dude in the poster holding hands with Rosita- that’s Mérante (he really likes to dance in his own shows, historically at least).
This means the movie could have used this ballet and done basically anything with it and no one could argue otherwise because we know jack shit about it.
And it actually happened!

In the foreground, the woman who emerges from an arch formed by a couple is the abbat-mage, the traditional leader of the dance who holds a beribboned halberd. Throughout the rest of the dance, the participants hold hands and skip at every beat alternating left and right feet. The direct gaze of the abbat-mage functions as a flirtatious invitation for the viewer to join the dance.
