Falling apart was easy, too easy. Falling into the sheets of your bed, dragging them up and letting yourself dissolve and shred mentally was all too simple.

You breath prickled at your chest before roaring in your ears. You clutched at yourself where you could, desperately searching for something, anything to ground yourself on.

Bless Keigo’s finely tuned wings and their ability to sense breath.

The moment he was through the apartment door, he could guess how you were feeling.

“Hey, hey, sweets, dove,” Keigo’s voice was cut through your fog, though it hardly did much to soothe the ache in your chest. “Can I sit with you?”

You managed to nod, head just barely poking over the covers.

Keigo was quick to rustle around, probably peeling off his uniform. You sniffled, rubbing at your eyes as your chest ached. It must’ve been what sent him moving faster, the blankets pulling away for him to join you underneath.

“You okay if I touch you?” He asked, hovering close behind your back.

You nodded again, maybe a bit afraid to use your voice.

It was all he needed.

As he pressed closer, you rolled, pushing your face into his chest. You gripped at his shirt with everything you had, burying yourself and praying that however awful you felt would pass.

“Oh, baby,” His voice was soft and silky as he ran his hand over your hair. “Try to focus on me, okay? Let’s get your breathing a little slower.”

You nodded. Keigo’s wing extended over the two of you, pressing down just enough to apply light pressure. Nothing crushing, just like a heavier blanket the duvet. It helped that you were truly surrounded by him, all red and warm and spiced-smelling.

Keigo cupped the back of your neck, rubbing a thumb up and down your the vertebrae in time with each slow inhale and exhale. You followed him the best you could.

“It’s alright, take your time, dove,” Keigo’s voice was so fucking soft above you. You were certain you were the only one he spoke like that for. The thought itself comforted you. He tugged you tighter to him, softly pressing his lips to your forehead, “I’m right here.”

Words are simply not enough to express how grateful I am to have you in my life. 

You are such a genuine and kind soul that just hearing your voice is enough to lift my spirits on even the gloomiest of days. You never fail to bring joy and laughter to those around you wherever you go and it’s something I deeply admire and cherish about you. You’re fearless in the face of whatever obstacles life throws your way and you have this determination and drive that I just know is going to take you wherever you want to go. You’re also so resourceful and crafty, I don’t think that there’s anything you can’t do if you set your mind to it.

You’re so much more than just my cousin. you’re my sister and my best friend. You motivate me to be my best self and inspire me to try things out of my comfort zone. I’m so thankful of how open we can be with each other and how I can tell you just about anything without fear of being judged and vice versa. I can’t even begin to tell you how happy I was when you announced that you would officially be living here. I had the stupidest grin on my face for a whole month, it was ridiculous how giddy and excited I was. I love you babe, and I honestly can’t imagine my life without you. Why am I tearing godammit I promised myself I wouldn’t cry.

May this new year bring you nothing but happiness and success, and may you make even more treasured memories with your friends and loved ones. I hope that this birthday is one of the best yet (we FINALLY GET TO CELEBRATE TOGETHER) and I can’t wait to spend countless more with you!
