So...the fact that we get Violet’s backstory so late into the series is a pretty good writing technique I think. It doesn’t garner her any sympathy for the audience, or at least it doesn’t overshadow the fact that she’s been manipulating and torturing the main character’s who the audience does genuinely care about. 

So while it makes us understand her it doesn’t really put people in the position to root for her. It’s smart.
