Beautiful choreography, especially the finale. The dancers are all incredibly talented, and I’m constantly amazed with the competition at Laasya every year.
Maybe I’m old school, but I really don’t understand the need for dancers to portray serious issues through the medium of classical dance. Yes, rape and rape culture is a pressing issue that everyone needs to be aware of, but why does a Bharatanatyam performance need to be the venue to confront these horrible realities? Classical dance can be uplifting and powerful, but it should never make the rasika feel uncomfortable. At all times, the dance must focused on reaching a higher spiritual consciousness. And the journey there for everyone has to be inviting and beautiful.
It comes across as lazy when the dancers take advantage of a current hot topic issue in the media, and use the subject matter to drive the emotion of the performance.. The content is not groundbreaking, nor does it tell a very compelling story to the rasika.
